Hey you experienced modders and inexperienced modders as wel

Antti

First time out of the vault
OK, I have never done any modding in Fallout so I have a few basic qustions.

What I am asking is: How long does it take to make a map (let´s say of the size of Den) without characters if you have plans for it already? You know, you don´t actually have to think anything, just create with ready plans. How long does it take to make with a very basic blueprint (that just tells where the houses should be but nothing too specific like where there should a single cardboard box or something)?

How long does it take to make a functioning "special" character and place it on a map? He has, let´s say, twenty lines of dialog, three different items and he can be bartered with. He also walks around randomly.

I am asking for a somewhat average time frame what it takes from a guy with knowledge ( but not necessarely advanced knowledge) of fallout mapping/modding to complete these tasks.

Just give me an answer ( whatever it is) and I´m grateful. Even if you don´t have experience that much you are still welcome to answer. How long did it take from yourself?

Oh, hello, I am new.

Anywhere from 1 day to 60 years, depending on how long you work and how much is already planed

If you use code snippets from other scripts and you knew what you were doing then about on to four hours

I recomend doing 40% of the scripts now, then do basic mapping, then fill the characters in, finish the scripts, then decorate the map.

I spent about 4 months on Black and White and still havent finished it. Fallout modding and hitting your head with a hammer are probably the same headache wise if you dont know what you are doing. Read as many tutorials as you can and prpactice many small things before doing anything big.

Oh, hello, I am new.
So am I, but I just dressed up reeeeeal snazzy today

I think it was one of the FMF scripters who figured it would take more lines of code to make a brahmin (or is that brahma? The German version is even more inconsequent about that) wander around than to write a Tetris clone.

So, yeah, 60 years sounds about right.

It's why I've delayed the release date of the game I'm working on (if it ever becomes a game -- right now I only have a full-screen black surface with "Hello World" in green Arial on it) until 2077.

At least I'm being realistic: my whole team consists of a lead programmer, lead designer, lead storywriter and project leader -- none of them not being me.

Yeah, I know it is a very broad time frame. But anyway, if the guy knows what he is doing and he just has to do the mechanical (nothing intellectual=thinking) job then how many hours would it take? Of course the guy knows his way through the editor and he has for an example hand drawn map of the area that he is supposed to translate into the Fallout world.

I don´t know shit about Fallout modding so maybe I´ll just stick to the intellectual side in other words content.

Do it and then you can tell us

Now, all you need is a group of slaves to do all the work for you.

So much for modding

Maybe if I´ll get a little too sore then I could take a look at it.

Anyway, if someone volunteers to make my ideas reality then fine.

I am asking these just because I would like to know how much work would it take to achieve what I have been thinking.

Ok for all you out there :

About one day for basic version of simple city map(1 level) (assuming you use some map for start), but it will need tinkering later.

Well for me it will take about a half to one hour with testing (using FSE).
But you should know that 20 lines of dialog is a small one.
Average "special" person has about 50 lines and the big ones about 100 or more.
