Hi and help...I am slowly losing my mind!

Hi all,
First, I'd like to greet everyone in this forum, I'm a new member and would like to contribute as much as possible once I get Fallout 2 to work, ha ha!
The game installs with absolutely no problem on any size (I tend to do the humungous installation) and once run, I get a good second of the 'please wait' image before being booted back to my desktop.
I have patched to 1.02b, and tried all the compatibility settings etc. etc. I must apologize if this problem has arisen elsewhere and I must stress that I have not been lazy, I've been trawling the threads for anything that will help and so far no luck.
I'm not particularly technically minded and admit that my 'noobness' is reeking through at the moment, but ANY help from anyone who tackled this would be greatly appreciated.
Tech Specs:
Windows XP
2GB RAM
250GB HDD
ATI Radeon 256MB, 1440x900 Resolution

Have you tried the things in the Troubleshooting sticky listed under "Blackouts under XP", "XP problems", "More crashing in XP" and "XP vs. XP"?

Many thanks for getting back so quickly.
I've edited this post, having delved a bit deeper into the forums and yes, I was being totally blind! There still doesn't seem to be some kind of resolute answer for the problem though, but at least I'm not the only one scratching my head, ha ha!
