Hi guys! Im having a serious crash here and....

Maxrunner

First time out of the vault
Hi! i recently installed fallout2 after finishing fallout1 and found the unofficial patch from killap and the restoration project also from killap to be very interesting. So i installed those two and started playing, the thing is, i've reached modoc, and the quest for strange farm ends up in crashing the game every time i fall through the hole in the cabin......does anyone knows what this might be, anyway i installed those two patches not even knowing what version i have, but the files are with installed so i thought that there would be no problem.....

Also, is there a way to know which version i have? The game came with the 3 in 1 fallout games from white label, it has fallout, fallout 2 and tactics and i bought it from amazon uk.
The restoration file from killap is the 1.1 version. And i also installed the npc appearances from killap.

regards,

Try reinstalling, apply the 1.02d official patch, then the restoration project (it includes all the unofficial patch bugfixes).

[edit: damn ninjas...]

Hey thanks guys, so the restoration patch already includes the unofficial patch from killap too? damn, also you're saying i should install the official patch too? i thought the unofficial patch included all the fixes made by black isle.....im just trying to maintain my savegames.....

1- Forget about the Official Patch - it's out dated and all the fixes it holds are included in killap's Unofficial Patch and/or his Restoration Project

2- Choose which you want to play, killap's UP or RP, then only install that on a "fresh" install of F2. "fresh" = you have never installed the game before or you have previous unistalled the game and deleted all files/folders that are left behind on your drive. (be sure whichever you choose is the latest downloaded from killap's server only)

3- Do not use any of the additional mods offered through the installer as I do not believe killap has fully worked out the compatiability issues yet. (he will though at some point)

4- Enjoy, read all related game threads (avoid spoilers!), report bugs in the appropriate thread, and wait for the next release.

Ok! I just installed fallout2 again, and finally i can see which version i have, its the 1.0.0. You said to not install other mods after killaps one, anyway i was using killap's npc appearance mod, and it was working. So just to confirm, the killaps restoration project includes his unofficial patch too right?

edit: so i installed the restoration project and just tryed to use the last savegames but it keeps crashing in the same place arrghhh....

Guess what, lol, i tryed to install only the unoficial patch but obviously the saves didnt load, but then i tryed the restoration patch 1.0 and it did work....pheww.....

Glovz - you're right about the patch. It isn't integrated in the Mac version and I thought it would be the same for the PC.

In general, savegames won't work after installing a mod.
Specifically, the savegame format will be broken if you change the number of: global variables, perks, NPCs, cities, or special encounters, or change the size of the world map. If any of the files vault13.gam, party.txt. city.txt, or worldmap.txt have been modified, you have to start a new game.

I forgot to ask, this is my first play of fallout2 and the question is should i play the restoration version or should i just play the original first?if its the latter should i use the unoficial path from killap ?

I'm sure everyone will say to at least play the game once without any mods/addons. I agree with this, but then again I always like to play games to their full potential and thus install all unofficial patches/expansions before playing them (ex Planescape, Arcanum, TOEE, Vampire, etc). This is me of course and the choice is really up to you. At the very least I wouldn't play the game without the unofficial patch. That has become mandatory when playing Fallout 2. Then again perhaps I am biased in answering this question.

Well since you're the creator of these patches i wanted to ask about something i noticed from my small experience with fallout 2 restoration patch, it seemed to me that travelling between towns had much more encounters with creatures and the numbers and difficulty of these encounters seem much more difficult. I assume you altered way the game interacts with the player and that using the unoficial patch you created doesnt change much but only fixes other problems that black isle left....right?

Oh man I envy you playing Fo2 for the first time, wish I could relive that first experience :D

If you have seemingly too many encounters with restoration project, you can try experimenting with settings in ddraw.ini, especially with WorldMapEncounterRate= setting. Increasing it reduces encounter rate. Also if you seem to be moving too fast on world map you can change WorldMapFPS= to something smaller.

Neither problem is really killap's Restoration Project's fault, instead they are the result of today's hardware being way faster than anything at the time of the game's release and how the two features were implemented.

Now that you mention it im playing only the unofficial patch and i also get a bit too many encounters.....i'll try altering it, which number you advise to remain close the original running....?
