'High-end' PC, but choppy A-A - And a thank you!

First time out of the vault
Hi,

First of all, I'd like to thank all the people who post here and contribute to solving other people's problems. You've helped me out with my problem!

I used to have this thing where no one would talk to me in 'Bunker E' - I tried a lot of things (like that large official patch) but nothing worked for me, so I just gave up for a while.

And then today, I thought to myself : "That's it, I'm going to fix this and I'm going to finish this damn game!". So I did something I hadn't tried before; I remembered that my best Fallout ressource had forums of its own, so I proceeded to go there and search the latter. After a while, I found out that fixing a certain file with WinRAR worked for me (it was corrupted).

So anyway, I'd just like to say thanks, because I didn't find this answer elsewhere on the internet (at least not by using Google).

---

But I do have one last question, and I've searched this forum for it (to no avail); I hope it hasn't been answered before (I know how anoying that can be) :

Why am I getting 'choppy' gameplay (when anti-aliasing on 'tiles' is enabled) with a system more than capable of running this game?

AMD 64 3000+
PoV GeForce 7800 GTX
1024 MB performance DDR400

I had the same problem on two other computers of the same setup (except one had an Albatron FX5200 and the other had a PoV 6600).

Does everyone have this problem? I mean, it's not unplayable, but it's far from being smooth, too.

Thanks anyway! And happy holidays!

:D

Well, hmmm, how can I explain this... It's usually when there are many "layers" that are changing in view (or when I move the screen to the sides) - the first levels of the game are okay, for example, but it's a lot more noticable in 'Bunker E' or the further you get in the game.

It's not a framerate issue, I think, it's more like there are micropauses between the 'layers' changing (ex: when you move up to a building you see the layers change to let you look inside of it). the moment I try moving the screen/field of view, I can notice those micropauses. The moment I try moving the screen/field of view, I can notice those micropauses, but, I don't get any of them without doing that (as long as theer aren't any layers changing), for example, if I just make the characters run around normally, there aren't any problems.

All other games work fine, my computer's in good condition (DirectX and latest drivers are installed, etc).

So basically it's a little slower poping roofs with anti-aliasing on than off and this tends to happen later in the game, yes?

The game does have memory leakage issues, most were meant to be fixed by the 1.27 patch but people still complain of slow down later in the game. I've never noticed any problem on my old pc and that was a piece of junk (but then I only play in TB mode) and I've never played the game without anti-aliasing so I can't comment on the difference in performance.

All I can suggest is that you try assigning a larger amount for your virtual memory or playing at a different resolution. Perhaps if you do start to encounter slow downs it's time to stop playing for the night? :)

My page file is 1.5 GB large. That and 1 GB of DDR400, makes 2.5 GB of total memory... I think that that's more than enough for this game and other, more demanding ones.

Oh well, I've played some more (arrived at the third level) and I've gotten used to it; don't really notice it anymore.

Thanks anyway.

Edit: I've restarted a campaign, but after reinstalling the game I've quickly tested further levels, from previous save games - that's how I know that it's 'worse' later on.

Obviously not if you're having difficulties. :)

Sorry I don't know what else to suggest (other than to defrag your hard drive more often when playing FOT).

How bad is the delay later on? Unless you play in the awful CTB mode it shouldn't affect gameplay.

Nawww, I play in squad turn base. Hey, if my memory is enough for FEAR, Far Cry, Doom 3 et cetera... Then I expect it to be enough for Tactics!

:P

Defragging the 'ole hard drive, good idea, haven't done that in a while.

I get the same problem aswell, it really gets bad when im scrolling around the map... kinda pisses me off
