Horizontal Lines Covering Screen (Fallout 1) Please Help :(

First time out of the vault
I recently purchased the fallout collection on Steam and upon starting the game up I immediately noticed that there were several columns of thin, stationary horizontal lines of varying colors (white, black, green) that covered the screen. This stopped when the by gamers for gamers logo thingy appeared and the lines continued to be absent throughout the intro movie. Unfortunately, the issue reappeared in the menu and when the actual game play began. The game plays fine but the lines are ruining the experience. I'm on Windows XP Home Edition 5.1, Build 2600, with an Intel Celeron 2.66 ghz cpu, Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, 2 GB Ram, and DirectX 9.0c. The version of Fallout 1 I have is 1.2, the one from Steam. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm dying to get started with this game. If there's any other information that would help in finding a solution, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I am having this issue as well with my original Interplay copy of Fallout 1. I have tried it with the original 1.0 install, the 1.1 patch, as well as the various unofficial TeamX patches. I have also installed the "Mash" High Resolution patch 4.0.2.

I am running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 2.6GHz with an Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS (which is what X_xer0_x is using). Perhaps a setting on the graphics card?

I'll tweak some settings on the graphics card and see if anything works!

I updated to the most recent drivers and the problem persists. (Ironically, the lines appeared on the splash screen for the driver update program!) It looks like this is a fairly common problem with older games with the Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. I've done a bit of searching but haven't found any solutions, except one person suggesting that deactivating harware acceleration on the sound card would eliminate the lines.

I'll try to look in to this more this weekend. If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm willing to try it out!

Shot in the dark but, is there an option in the high-rez patch to switch to 16 bit color?

Im not sure if this feature is only in the fallout 2 hi-rez patch or the regular fallout high rez patch.

Anyway, look for that option, change to 16 bit color, and give her a run. Also, maybe try changing your desktop settings to 16 bit and try that.

There should be a configuration file for the high rez patch. There are options to run the game in DDraw7 mode or DX9 mode. Try whichever one isnt currently enabled.

I gave up and moved over to another computer we have in the house. Seems to be working great with it's built in Radeon card.

I did some additional browsing this morning and didn't come up with a solution, but encountered a lot of others who had problems with the 8400 GS on older games. It is possible the power supply is not powerful enough and that is causing problems with the graphics card, but I'm not going to open the case at this time to look in to it.

I ended up installing the fallout Fixt mod and everything works perfectly. I'd recommend it for anyone having similar troubles with fallout.
