How do I make Katja use a gun?

I don't have the "Use the best weapon" dialogue option like Ian when talking to her. So even though she has a desert eagle in her inventory, she always uses her bare hands in a fight.

And WTF is wrong with Ian? Why does he never reload, but instead pulls out a knife and forgets about the gun?

EDIT: I am talking about Fallout 1.

Katja can't use a Desert Eagle since she needs weapons with the SMG animation. The 14mm Pistol and .223 Pistol use this.

Ian might sometimes switch to a knife if he hasn't got enough AP for another shot. If he never reloads something is fishy though. I assume you've given him ammo that fits his weapon.

Thanks for the info. I'll change some guns around.

BTW this is the first time that I play Fallout, and I'm absolutely loving it. It reminds me A LOT of Arcanum (which is understandable since Troika's devs worked on Fallout), and I consider that one of the best games ever made.

Odd, i thought katja could use pistols, I distinctly rember being disintigrated by her mid fight when she pulled out a plasma pistol she happend to have in her inventory (this was years ago with that npc glitch that made them always there, in the same spot, forever, on all maps, and about 37 tychos all standing on top of eachother. I tried to steal from her at the rat cave at the biggening when i noticed the bug.)
