Makatak
First time out of the vault
I recently completed Fallout 1 at level 13, with the realization that some of the progressions I made were very much based on luck.
For example, I defeated the mutants in the watershed at level 5 with only small guns and my two companions, Dogmeat and Ian. But I was just fooling around, not thinking I would actually survive. To my surprise however, I made it thanks to the fact that the mutants were being distracted by my comrades. And at one point (and this was critical) the mutant with the flamethrower missed me and hit harry instead. And then I killed the flamer and chased down Harry. And that was that. Unfortunately Ian didn't make it, but I thought my unexpected victory was well worth it.
I wiped out the Gun Runners by finding a narrow spot along the northeast edge of the toxic river that I could run/hop across. I snuck up on (even though my char sucked at stealth) and flamed the southeast sniper, alerting nobody else. And then I entered the backdoor, killed the guard inside, and camped outside the doorway, waiting for other guards to walk through into my flames of death. They didn't exactly drop like flies and I was hurt quite a bit in the process, but I just made it. Then I killed the southwest sniper and bridge guard separately, and proceeded to crap myself (not literally) as I was looting the place.
Later on, the Deathclaw mother went down thanks to a final critical hit of 170-something damage from my flamethrower just as I was near the end of my rope trying to kill that thing.
And finally, I was having trouble figuring out how to kill the master while avoiding the numerous mutants spawning in the hallway. Focusing all of my attention on killing the master didn't seem to be working. So a few hours ago, I decided to just run around and stay alive as long as possible and see if there was any end to a seemingly endless stream of spawning mutants. They seemed to stop respawning by about the 8th or 10th mutant. I spent a number of rounds being surrounded by mutants and shooting myself up the whazzoo with super stim paks. It turns out, at least half of the mutants died as a result of friendly fire from miniguns and flamethrowers. So once their numbers thinned down, I stopped stimming myself like a hardcore junkie and killed off the remnants of them (most were just using their fists at that point). I suffered eye damage during the strife, so I ran away from the Control Room, made several failed Doctor attempts before finally healing my eye, ran back in, and easily killed the lone master with my rocket launcher and minigun with what little ammo I still had.
And that is part of the tale of my first completion of Fallout 1.
