I know there were only about 120-140 vaults made and that from these vaults came the humans that populate fallout.

But here are a couple of questions. The Fallout Bible says that just about everything else, man or beast, was either killed or mutated by the great war.

But then it says that the dwellers of the different vaults joined with other "survivors." It also notes that there were other survivors from military bases, etc.

Well, then how many people are really out there? Some of the vaults were supposed to have over 1000 people in them. Could it be possible that there were other "vaults" not made by Vault-Tec?

Your thoughts?
 
Well, the tribals must have survived somewhere. I don't figure them for military base survivors, (although the inhabitants of Arroyo are descended from vaultdwellers as well as other folk)

Difficult to say but NCR claims to have a population of three thousand or so and very few of them will be Shady Sands survivors who came from Vault 15.

I'd say that the idea of everyone outside bunkers dying is exaggerated because I don't quite buy the idea that every surviving person come from an underground bunker (especially if the vaults were really part of the experiment POTUS mentions in Fallout 2.
 
As well as people who were in bunkers, you'd probably have a lot of people who, simply put, weren't affected. America is a big country, and nuking every inch of it would be both unreasonable and silly. You'd have people like survivalist gun nuts, recluses, religious cults, farmers and midgets living in deserts and the mountains and stuff. Plus, due to the miracle of 50's comic book science, a lot of people who were affected with radiation wouldn't be killed, they'd just mutate and gain cool super powers, such as Amazing Tumours of Justice, and Detachable Teeth.
 
inconsistency in the bible

To be honest there is an inconsistency in the bible. I was reading through it the other day and in a later addition it mentions that there were survivors. It even mentions that some of the other countries might not have been affected and perhaps there were some american units trapped off in China.

Figure even if this is an alternative future built around 1950s pulp ideas, there were a lot of fallout shelters built in the 1940s and 50s, and probably continued to be built thoroughout.

It always seemed that the Vaults were for the wealthy and affluent who could afford to be that nervous about a possible war. But military shelters, science shelters, and private shelters should abound.
 
Vaults were for those who could get to them in time.

Tribals most likely came from vaults. The thing about that is that they were sheltered from hardship in vaults. On the outside, survival became paramount, so passing down knowledge would have been problematic. It wouldn't take more than a few generations for a huge chunk of the knowledge of the vault dwellers to be lost, much the way the Romans who survived the initial attacks of the Northern hordes forgot how to do much of their architecture and how feats of engineering like the aquaducts worked.
 
50'Pulp says those outside the underground fallout shelters will mutate (in case of 'Fallout', that would be ghouls) into horrible freaks or beautiful people with awesome mutant powers if exposed to a strong/prolonged radiation.

I agree with St. Proverbius- that most of the tribals are former vault dwellers.

There is also inconsistent statements in the bible. At times it talks about how everyone not in a vault was affected by the FEV virus, but that different levels of exposure had different effects. It also mentions a couple of other things.

(1) that vault dwellers who emerged after the war mixed with other survivors. Well, who the hell where they and how did they survive?

(2) While the bibles do indicate that thousands of people could be housed in a vault, it also mentions that others who survived in military bases, special installations, etc. There was also mention of other countries that might not have been effected.

SO how many people are left?
