Hello,
ever since I upgraded from celeron 1,7 ghz many years ago I cannot enjoy fallout 2 anymore.
I can never work around two things:
1. map speed and encounter rate
2. fade ins/outs (from main menu to new character menu or load menu, after using skills, after death, etc).
As per the map speed and encounter rate I use Killap's unnoficial patch, and it surely makes the map travel much slower, but still the encounter rate is very low, I can go through half a world map (surely now it takes much longer) but without encountering single hostile character.
In the sfall documentation it says that the encounter rate is now independent of map travel speed and CPU speed, but it does not feel like its true - I remember that while playing on my old computer the encounter rate was much higher - or is it just my subjective feel? I do not want to use any encounter boosters, since they work differently on different machines, you can never know for sure if the encounter rate is correct (as when playing vanilla game on pentium II).
As regards the fades problem - they are nonexistent either playing vanilla or with sfall (like gog release).
Is there a way to restore them? I know there is - in one of the earlier GOG releases there was a ddraw.dll file included which fixed the fades - they were working like a charm even on windows 7 and 10.
I still have this file (even though the gog release now uses sfall) - when put to fallout 2 folder the fades work like when playing on my old computer. The problem is - if I use this file the sfall and world map fix is unavailable - you have to choose between ddraw.dll files.
Is there a way to integrate this fades fix into sfall/killap's patch?
I would upload the ddraw.dll file, but the forum wont let me. I can send it via email if anybody wishes.
Perhaps the fades can be fixed via some sfall settings?
I really would love to play f2 properly, I am even cosidering building retro PC just for that - but it would be nice if I could just use my 'new' computer instead.
