For some reason I cant open the gates u encounter to let ur Hummvee through. I found a key in a chest on a roof, but it doesnt do anything when I try to unlock the gates. What am I missing?

Okay this is where FOT branches off. In mission four you're offered two basic choices. One is Preoria and the other is to make sure you bring the Hummer home intact.

I'm doing Peoria now and that mission needs all half dirty dozen equipped with power armor, RPGs, miniguns, and plasma rifles but I digress.

The basic rule for this mission is CONTROL THE HIGH GROUND. A lot of raiders are going to be on top so before you move that HMMWV get the rest of team to climb up and shoot and loot. If you haven't came into this mission with everybody equipped with AKs and plenty of ammo to spare chances are you will prolly reequip Stitch pump action Winchester bird blaster with an assault rifle (prolly not; with flechette ammo you can go through two oppoenents at once)

Remember that the key is located in a chest on the roof. A raider told you so demanding a Happy Pie (tm) or whatever in return (I just greased him for asking a handout :P).... So close to the gates is a switch that allows you to move on out. So what you need to do is hit that switch. But since it's behind a locked closed door and no real way to pick the locks... hence the key in the chest. One character with the key unlocks, opens the door, yadda yadda yadda.

This mission has lotsa lotsa badniks. But you will naturally load up on AKs and 7.62 ammo a la Mission 3 when R. Lee Ermey told you to kick ass, take names and bring some Raiders ears home to show to the new recruits.

Note: be careful. There is at least a pair of gomers tossing grenades and one joker with a RPG-7 rocket launcher (if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck) and if you're fast enough you can grab that plus reloads. If not you'll just grab the rounds and have to scrounge HEAT or HE rounds elsewhere down the line.

Also interesting are the civilians. FOT it seems hand to hand and melee combat's just plain devastating and with CTB you end up micromanaging just about every character's movements. Although this game needs the following: smoke and CS cans, LAWs, the M203 (or other weapons systems and accessories which you can add on to your weapons), and at least one or two sound supressed weapons (or a muzzle can that you can attach to handguns or SMGs).

Anyway getting back to the civilians. Since thery're going to rush you and I mean rush you put some distance and have most of your kiddies set their weapons on rock and roll... just be sure of clear lanes of fire or else you will end up shooting your own people in the back.

you must do both missions, not only one

True enough. But it's a classic case of the lady and the tiger. Who do you deal with first? But it's stills emilinear and what happens during a mission does dictate what Gunny Hartman says at the end (whether you really screwed the pooch or just a "Semisatisfactory, puke. Keep that up and I might allow to serve as a rifleman in my beloved Corps" :P

Preoria has those damned ugly turrets and tough bugs. Macomb has lotsa desperate people and those gates.

(Note to Microforte. The Lee Enfield and WW2 Brens used the semirimmed .303. The M14 is a gas oerpated, air cooled weapon chambered for the 7.62mm NATO stnadard round commonly known as the .308 Winchester. The similar G3 and FAL is also chambered for this caliber which is nothing more than the .30 06 with the case chopped to two iches with the same powder load and the same bullet- well three grains lighter).

I cannot believe R. Lee Ermey as a DI would allow such egregious errors in such a game. I say Microforte hit the deck and give the Gunny tweenty :P.

I pray that Interplay/Microfote will get that damned patch out soon and deal with these crashing problems and what I consider long load up times after you quit a game (because things went to hell) and go to the main menu.

CTB does take some used to and I think FOT gameplay was semi inspired by the likes of Diablo II. God knows in CTB you have to micromanage you characters especially when dealing with fast enemies like deathclaws (goddamn those things refuse to die with AK and M16 fire; need a minigun and powered armor and laser or plasma weapons). In short you become a mouse moving fool :P.
