I stayed up quite late last night to finish FO 1...

CaptainStag

First time out of the vault
and finally beat it, only to have it poop out on me at the end. Well, not really. The ending goes by and whatnot, but I don't hear anything he's actually saying! The only sound file that does play is the Brotherhood one, but that only plays for about a sentence and a half before he cuts out again.

I've had absolutely no problem with sound before this, so it was rather unexpected.

I have a second concern which I might as well address too while I'm here. It certainly isn't quite as drastic, but I've heard that the ending changes slightly depending on whether you have bloody mess trait or berserker status. I played through with bloody mess, so I saw the violent end. Just because I'm the sort of person who always has to see everything, I tried using the FALCHE editor to set my traits to something else, so that I could get the normal ending. Unfortunately, it didn't work and my character still blew the Overseer to pieces..... Anyone try to change it themselves and have luck with it?

I tried to add "childkiller" to mycharacter to get that alternate "ending", but it didn't work. :(

Also, ther were two parts where there was no sound, but that was just pictures showing a barren dessert. I dunno if there was supposed to be speech to it...The speech dropped out some other places too (rather, it failed to enter), but I had subtitles on so I didnt miss much.... I dont remember exactly, but I think the Brotherhood--section had sound all the way for me.

1) the sound fucks up due to compability issues (i think), just turn on the subs

2) the end cant be changed with falche, it is based on your actions in the towns during play

3)
it didn't work and my character still blew the Overseer to pieces.

uh? you can only blow him by initiating the action yourself last i checked...

Thanks for the replies.

My character kills him without any input from me whatsoever. I don't even have control of my character when the Overseer is walking away from me, so I guess I'm a bit confused by what you're saying.

I had totally forgotten about subtitles. I'll just use those I guess.

Each scene goes by so fast that I can't even read the subtitles. They stop as soon as the sound file ends, which unfortunately is immediately.

I guess it doesn't matter, the game itself was rewarding just playing it and I already know some of the ends anyway.

This question has been asked and answered a million times.

Start > Run > "dxdiag" > Sound tab > Turn Hardware Sound Acceleration to basic.

EDIT: By the way, the only thing that's different is you don't blow the overseer to pieces. I remember it having something to do with your Karma, so try changing that.

didnt remember that, btw you can still blow em to bits with good karma too :)

if the sound still doesnt work you could probably go dig in the files and extract the audio to listen to it with an external program

Sorry if the question was already asked. I checked around a bit before posting but didn't see it anywhere.

Thanks for the help.

If u have bloody mess u'll blow the Overseer 2 pieces no mather what as far as I know

Confirmed.
I had high karma but the bloody mess trait. I didn't even get to choose -- note that in censored (i.e German only?) versions of Fallout there is no way to see the Overseer die IIRC.
That's because you can only chose between No violence and Low violence. Bloody Mess doesn't make a difference there.

never knew there was such a version...

i only know the UK (no kids, but gore activated) & US (original) version

i only recently got the US version, and i ve got to say it's even better

aside from the obvious things (such as the quest in modoc to search for the kid that cant be solved the right way in the UK version (without the special kids patch)), i also met melchior junior today in redding for the first time. he wants to a be a magician too :p

these little things make the game even better

I've never seen an ending where my character blows away the overseer! I would love to see that, I've been wanting to cap that AH every since the first time I finished the game and he threw me out (even though I figured it was coming). All I have to do is pick the "Bloody mess" trait for it to happen?
Jay

you can just finish the game in your normal playstyle and then press A (or Q for azerty) to initiate attack after you talked to him and he wants to step back into the vault.

There are three versions (the other localized versions are most likely based on the UK version):

Uncensored (US)
No children (UK)
Censored (DE)

The German version has no kids and only the "low violence" deaths. People drop dead. If you set it to "low violence" rather than "no violence", they drop dead and bleed.
IIRC the only sprites missing are the children tho, so it's possible to circumvent the gorelessness by editing the config file (setting the violence level value to 5 does the trick IIRC).

Not that I'd have to care anymore, I bought the UK version when my Fallout 2 CD went FUBAR. Thus I have the English demo of FO1 (on CD, with original jewel case; and on two magazine CDs), the German version of FO1 (once as distributed by IPLY and once on a magazine CD) and the FO1/FO2 WhiteLabel UK combi.
The children patch does the rest.

If anyone can confirm this I'll put it in my guide. But in that case, what's the gore patch for? It's huge, so I had assumed it contained the FRMs for all gory deaths for all critter types. If the violence knob on the preference screen is locked to "no" or "low" I suppose you need to do the config workaround in either case.

The config screen is a bit different in the German version. There are only two options on the violence control: None and Normal. Normal however equals the "Low" setting of the UK and US version.

I was wrong with the gore tho. The FRMs are apparently not included. You need to get the gore patch (which usually includes the children patch) and THEN edit the config to set the violence level higher. The alternative is to get the EXE of the US or UK version and overwrite yours.

The patch weighs a whopping 33MB -- equivalent to roughly 32.2MiB, which Windows labels as "MB" inspite of the SI standard (M is for base 10, folks! Mi is the one for base 2).

You poor UK/DE people..

Interplay was not fair to reap the children/gore out of the game. That just ruins it.

Well good thing I'm in teh US *laughs*

By the way, your sound problem..

It's not caused by malfunctioning hardware, it's caused by a corrupted .mve inside your master.dat

Scratches are no good for a high density CD like Fallout.

Stoopid Yankees! Why do they make high density CDs even though they know that it will not survive a prolonged use. plz peeps
