If you would have the sourcecode of Fallout ... let's dream

Vault Dweller
Okay, this topic is kind of strange but we want to know your dreams of a better Fallout 2.

Imagine that you as a modder got the sourcecode of Fallout 2 because Herve released it when he went insane  So if you would create a Fallout game, what features and ideas you would like to include that Fallout 2 didn't offer.

This is more about technical issues and not about story, so for example my suggestion would be a weather system: rain, snow and cool desert storms :) And I would like to see a better light system with dynamic lights.

I'll create a list from the suggestions and the ianout team will discuss which of them to include.

So feel free to share your dreams of the perfect fallout engine :)

System of repairing items, weapon, armor and other.

Food - eating food, starvation.

Better AP, JHP ammo and armor system. In Fallout AP is not working good, you know.

Weapon with different types of ammo i.e. normal ammo, acid ammo, explosive ammo at the same caliber.

Also weapons with multiple types of different caliber ammo, either for pre-war equipment like underslung grenade launchers or post-war handmade weapons with multiple barrels etc.

Inventory system that's limited by volume as well as weight, so if you want to carry more stuff you'll need a bag to put it in. Plus quick item slots? Like a belt with holster, scabbard and ammo pouches, so that specific items placed there in can be accessed for less aps than stuff in your backpack.

Seperate head slot for helmets/glasses etc.

NPCs with more character that'll not always do what you say, and will not always carry stuff for you or give it back, and won't let you just strip them down and abandon them when someone better is found.

Power Armour treated as a vehicle that you click on to climb into/out of, so no carrying 3 sets of armour around.

Magazine system for ammo, as well as seperate bullets. Energy cells that have a certain number of charges rather than each use using one cell. Shell casings generated by firing a weapon, which can be traded and reloaded.

Multiple attacks, i.e. bayonets and butt strilkes, pistol whipping.

Sausages.

More locales

Wide range of perks and traits.

Wide variation to the skills, like Gambling can be more then just casting lots - helps in special criticals or finding places....

Variety of location.

I have to go with the acid rain, sand storms, etc.
Plus I'd like to walk on top of rooves.
Also, I don't know if it's dooable on a 2d engine, but the advantage of height when in combat would be a fun adition...
And I agree with the starfury-guy, the power armour should be treated like a vehicle, not an armour...and some other minor realism-aditions would be welcomed.

I always thought it would be interesting if one was able to fall into a vat and become a super mutant. Thus many things will be changed. Maybe have a chance of being a ghoul instead of dieing from radiation poisoning?

Another that would be good is the ability to disgues more effectivly and the charisma would help you act. Thus an acting perk can come out of this.

Different types of weather would be great.

destructables would be nice. Haven't checked your progress for a while so blame me for being lazy if you have this feature already. Anyway, what I meant is basically the same thing that was in the Van Buren engine. Scenario: You're shooting at a guy with your rifle and of course not all the bullets hit the target but hits the barrels thats placed behind him. The barrels, filled with [input favourite chemical], explodes and gives damage to the nearby NPCs. Maybe this feature was in fallout: tactics... would like to see it what ever the case is. AND of course some doors, furniture and other stuff would apply under the same rules. If a bookshelf would be destroyed all the stuff in it would of course lie amongst all the debris, so the player should still be able to search the p.k.a.* bookshelf. I can't see why you would want to do this (except for the doors though) but it MIGHT add to the realism of the game..

Added: I'm suffering a concussion right now so I might be far out on this one but weren't you able to destroy objects in fallout 2? (Yeah the door in the temple of trials, but that doesn't count if that's the only one) I don't think I ever tried to shoot at any door but I belive I used explosives sometimes...... hmm hmm..

More light effects would be nice... [Added: ..yeah you already said that, silly me...]

Smoke effect when using grenades and such and other particle effects in general. (Fire and stuff you know)

Fog! Could be damn nice on those graveyards just to get the feeling right..

Added: And yeah, the possibility to load 3d directly into the engine and not have to be locked to the pre-rendered things (preparing to get b*** r**** for life). Could be nice for smaller stuff like grenades and bullets (flying around). Easier to calculate accurate hit-tests I think. ADDED: Got carried away a little! Forgot that we're still playing an RPG here where the hits and misses are decided by dice.

I agree with requim that being able to have a greater inventory control would be nice. Sort of like diablo/bauldurs gate where you could put different stuff on different parts of the player.

- helmets/gogles
- boots (normal/spiked/rubber)

Also an extended weapon attack modes would be nice. It would be cool to be able to have a bayonet on a rifle for hand to hand combat.

If you were to increase the usefullness of HtH and melee combat then you would need to introduce a penalty for trying to use a ranged weapon in close combat or have an attack advantage if you have a melee weapon and the other guy has a bazooka for example.

- High res mode
- New Perks for the player
- New Weapon/item perks

If I had the source code I would try to find the reason to the "Bugs? Dammit Gus" message.

If that was in fallout then I would play a female character more often.

/me would suggest improving the barter system. If store owner has TONS of 10mm pistols, he should give you a damn-low price on those etc. If the merchant specializes in melee weapons, he might give u better price on those, and pay less for non-melee stuff.

More injuries - like broken tooth (might decrease charisma ;) ) or something like that. That might put some doctors-specialists in the game like dentists or dermatologists :)

Dunno if its connected with sourcecode, but if the character is badly injured, the NPCs could react like "man, u r messed up" or "dude, where's yer eye?" etc.

The injuries from tactics would be nice: winded, concussed, etc.

Better use for items and more use of skills, like able to mod weapons, etc. Able to customize your player and easier modding capabilities.

Radio, lighters and those sort of items find more uses.... Use a radio to communicate with well placed NPC characters or make contact with settlements.

Far more exploration - if you stop in the desert or broken city, able to explore the enviroment.

Well supposing when IPLY goes belly up...the assets are auctioned off/sold on ebay.

someone will wind up with those source code backup tapes...

Then porting FO2 to every OS ever would be the order of the day.

FO2 for Solaris, Linux and Mac OSX!

Then getting on with implimenting all those Van burren ideas into a FO2.5 type game.

IanOut works already on linux and the mac port will make it beta 5 if we can gain a mac dev ;)

Well.. If I have understood the situation of IanOut right it don't support 3d. Well it would be nice to be able to import 3d objects directly.

We're having some some diehard 2d fans on our new team (including me) and we try to improve the optics but keep it 2d ISO.

So we won't use a 3d engine in the future, at least not if I would decide it. As the new team tries to decide things democratic per vote your idea has only small chances to get realized. AFAIK SztupY planned direct 3d model support but I'm quite sure that the rest of the team got other priorities. But if you goz strong arguments for the 3d model support: please explain and we'll look into this :)

The higher resolution always makes the sprites look a lot nicer. The problem is they are so big

cooperative Mulitplayer would be cool. Beating the game with some friends would be gr8. I wouldn't have to waste points on charisma, 'couse someone else on my team would :).
