Incredibly persistent music error (Fallout 1)

Hanta

First time out of the vault
I recently installed the game on my Windows XP computer, and all seemed okay. I chose humongous download size. However, for whatever reason, even after browsing through many threads for answers to my problems, updating the patches, and performing many troubleshooting steps, I am still unable to get my sound to function at all. No music, no dialogue, no sound effects, no nothing. I changed the directory in Fallout.cfg to match the location of the sounds. I tried fiddling with the hardware acceleration but to no avail. I of course ran it both in and out of compatibility mode, and there's no sound in those either. I'm using directx 9.0. Can anyone think of any reason why the sounds might just not work for whatever reason? I'm dying to experience this game to its full potential and I can't wait to fix this obnoxious problem. I've read the sticky and I think I've included all the info I need to, but let me know if I need to give more.

Hmm, this may sound stupid, but have you checked the sound levers in the options menu?
This happened to me when I was using a save game from someone else. At first I couldn't understand why there where no sound all of a sudden. Restarted the computer and fiddled with the usual things. Turned out the other player had simply turned off the sound though. :wall:

Yep. Just double-checked to be sure and all of the sound options seem fine. Also checked master volume settings on my computer and everything seems like it should work, but it still just won't. I'm not sure why. Since I've already purchased the game, maybe it would be acceptable to see if torrenting a different copy of the game and installing it instead might help? Maybe there's just something wrong with the game files in my copy...

Ah well, was worth a try.
Could you post what's in your fallout2.cfg and also tell where your sound files are stored?

Where did you buy it from? What's the location of the game folder? Having no music is a rather common problem, no sound at all is weird.

I bought it off amazon. Would you recommend that I contact the seller as a last resort?
I've just realized that perhaps the problem is that the game isn't cooperating with my sound card. Should I maybe try and run an emulator for a sound card that I KNOW works with it? I use Realtek HD.
The game is located in C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT
The sound is directed to come from C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\DATA\SOUND\MUSIC\
All music files are present and accounted for in that folder.
Here's my Fallout.cfg. I made the text small so it wouldn't seem to spam-y

This leads me to believe you have installed the DOS version of the game. Is that correct?
If so you will prolly need to run sound setup, though I'm not all too sure your sound card is compatible. Maybe if you run it through DosBox or something.
But I would suggest you try to install the Windows version instead.
And if you have both a Fallout.exe and a Falloutw.exe, run with the latter as that is the windows version.

If you are not running the Dos version, I don't know what the problem could be. Your fallout.cfg looked correct anyway.
I did see a post saying that doing a manual install (instructions on how to do that can be found via the NMA main page) fixed it for him. something about sound.exe (or whatever the sound setup program is called) messing with something.
