First time out of the vault
I'm trying to run Fallout 2 in windowed mode, but I keep getting an error saying failure to initialize input device, followed by a crash. This happens after I install the latest patch, the unofficial patch OR the restoration project.
System:
- Laptop
- Vista Home Premium
- DX 10, November 2008 runtime
- Intel 945 Mobile graphics card
Here's what happens:
- Fresh FO2 install from CD, using D3D Windower with 800x600 Windowed mode: Game works
- FO2 install + latest official patch, using D3D Windower with 800x600 Windowed mode: Failure to start input devices. Crash to desktop.
- FO2 install + Unofficial Patch OR Restoration Project, using either D3D Windower OR ddraw ini file set to mode 5 (dx9 windowed): Failure to start input devices. Crash to desktop.
No other mods/patches/cracks/hacks/... installed.
Is this problem related to running Vista/DX 10? If so, is there any way to downgrade my DX to 9 again? Since I only play old games on this laptop anyway, there's no real reason to run DX 10 on this thing whatsoever (or does Vista require it?).
I really absolutely loathe running this game in full screen - so I'm wondering if there is a solution to this problem. Otherwise I guess I'll just have to play it unpatched.
