Installing Fallout 2?

Teemu

First time out of the vault
I installed the Fallout 2 (I think it's the UK version since I live in northern europe) on my new computer with windows xp. I tried both the installation program on the disc and the manual installation instructions on this site. The game was working fine, but after I applied the patch (the official 1.02) I keep getting this error message about needing the cd. Is there some paragraph I need to remove from the .cfg file or what?

Oh yeah, and if the information I need is already on this site, I tried to find it before writing this post.

Ps. I tried the big and humongous installations

I apreciate you taking the trouble to help me.
Right now the cfg file is as follows (humongous install):
"[sound]
music_path1=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=F:\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
art_cache_size=261"

I used the installation program on the last install. when I did it manually, I copied the text from the instructions.

Hmm looks screwed somehow. Mine ones is a lot bigger:

Try to use this one and change the paths to fit your install location.

If this fails: install Fallout2 to a location without spaces (C:\fo2). That should work :-)

Make sure you have both the master.dat and critter.dat in the locations specified, and also make sure you have all files from

F:\data\sound\music\

put into

C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\

(if those are the pathnames you're using). Nothing else I can think of right now.

There must be something wrong with the way I patch it, since it runs fine before patching and locks up after the patch. And to my knowledge the patch doesn't touch the cfg file, or does it? I have patched it by opening the patch exe with winzip and extracting it into the directory. It just overwrites the file Fallout2.exe and adds the file patch000.dat. This is getting frustrating, but thanks for your help!

Hmm which patch did you apply? At least we need to find out what version you got.

Please post the size of your "critter.dat" in bytes (real size! not the size occupied on the disk!). After that we'll know what FO version you got and can help you :-)

I applied the UK patch v1.02 and the size of the critter.dat is 166 951 131 kb. But if I remember correctly, the UK patch is the one I've always used since I bought the game.

*edit*
I checked, and I've got the US version of the game. So installing the right patch might solve the problem. Thanks for the help.

Hello

I have this exact same problem, I have followed the NMA manual installation guide perfectly (even using the C:\games\fallout2 addresses they gave) and I get the 'You need the Fallout 2 Disk to play' message.

I have patched my game in exactly the same way as Teemu. I have the UK 1.02 patch that came on my FO1/FO2 double pack disk.

The real size of my "critter.dat" in bytes is 166,273,976

Thank you for your help, I don't know whereelse to look!

I'll leave this open with the warning to read the goddamn stickies, or I'll be adding people to the Blacklist tomorrow.

I've read the damn stickies... I coulda made this a new post but I didn't. I'm just asking for help, it's not hurting anyone o_O

The copy I have is the FO1/FO2 UK set released by 'White Label' and Virgin interactive - It's part of a large budget range. I bought the game about 5 years ago and have resurrected it, although the new copies I see in the shops appear to be identical to my version.

Fallout 1 works fine, if I skip the Setup and go to Install.exe on the CD. Since then it's been playing with no troubles. Fallout 2 has no Install.exe so I have to use Setup - Which gives me a blank blue screen and I cannot see anything. I tried the manual install and it says I require the CD (which I have in the drive), so I assume that if I managed to use the proper installer (like FO1) then that problem would be averted.

Tok, banned for not supplying sufficient information. Which should have been obvious given the previous content of this thread and the issue about paths. Teemu's problem was an issue about patching with the wrong patch, since it worked until they patched. Tok, on the other hand, didn't even pay attention to the fact that Teemu was patching a US game with a UK patch, and yet we're supposed to believe Tok is doing the same? No, not quite. Teemu was actually able to get the game working initially due to installing the game correctly.

Tok, on the other hand, simply copied the manual install verbatim without any regard to the notes in this thread or the installation guide, and therefore it is not a similar issue. Tok didn't pay attention to paths and how his issue didn't have any relation to the rest of the thread, because he is Torr-brother.

If you're not bright enough to put in the correct paths, and then try to lie to my face about having read the stickies and install guide to the point of claiming "perfectly", even when the install guide gives you an example of an installation location to use and you still fuck that up, goodbye.

EDIT: Then there's this thread, which I found by Searching. Since they didn't give any more information, they couldn't be helped either, and there's the point of the copy protection. Now if that was your problem, then you might have to have the CD in the drive and also point your .ini paths to your CD for the game to work, but we'll never know for certain, because we hate to play 20 Questions when the pertinent information should have been posted to begin with.
