Intel to AMD: Your x86 License Expires in 60 Days

Hopefully, this will lead to some progress in the industry, and someone starts manufacturing processors based on a different technology.

Worst case scenario, AMD will pay Intel a lump of money to end the scandal.

Ultimately, this is "black" PR for both companies, free ads, if you will.

Yes, please. x86 assembler gives me rash.

There is a new architecture in the works. At least on Intel's side. Its called AVX - Advanced Vector Extensions. Apparently, they'll be included in the new processors on 2010. What I'm worried about is that processor tech is relatively close to a barrier. The manufacturing process is close to the 16 nm transistor size limit. Below this, the quantum tunneling effects would make leakage currents generate too much heat to efficiently manage. As transistor densities mount, this is a big problem.

actually Intel got AMD by the balls, but Intel also depends on patents owned by AMD, so this can get ugly really soon.

either way, don't expect this thing to blow up. it's just flexing the muscles to then back down after a secret backroom deal has been closed.

I'm thinking intel is trying to squeeze the competition in any way possible. They have already sued nvidia trying to screw them out of making new chipsets for the latest intel gear, found here. Meanwhile the latest chipset form nvidia (ion) is far better then what anything that intel has.

I think Intel might just do something crazy... like put the computer industry into recession lol.

It's definitely an interesting move... It reminds me of the insanity that surrounded the Rambus ram law suit. It had merit but despite that, the entire industry allied to kick Rambus in the junk and almost defunct the company.

Ohhh I remember paying close to a grand for my souped up gig of RDRAM! those days were sweet... and now, that they are over, most in the industry realized they went with the losing side of that law suit and that RDRAM was the correct path to take.
