Iran about to roll?

The Economist:
America is getting more international help in its quest to build a peaceful, democratic Iraq but, ironically, its plans are under threat because the spiritual leader of the country’s Shia majority, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, is demanding fully democratic elections

That about sums it up :)
Let's build an "almost fully democratic peaceful country" without democratic elections. Yay.

A similar thing happened in Poland a bit before the abolishion of the totalitarian communist state. The Church had a key role in supporting workers' syndicates and protests against the red government, too. In 1980 there were supposed to be "nearly fully democratic elections" which were, once again, rigged. The combination of "social instability/ social unrest" and the government ramming shit down people's throats a fourth decade eventually led to something near a revolution, with Gen. Jaruzelski imposing martial law. Heard a ton of party stories from the old geezers about how they set fire to the tanks on the street.

In the meantime, it remains unclear if Iraq can hold together and become a peaceful, liberal democracy in which no group subjugates any other.

It'd be good if America became a peaceful liberal democracy in which no group subjugates any other, too. Without the Florida Fraud Follies, and other goodies the Bush administration cooked up.

I am *so* relieved to see that some americans have critic awareness and eyes to see what their government is really doing! Cause some have really trouble getting in touch with reality and still think their country is "doing the right thing".
