Is it bad when your...........

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
Is it bad when your PC cant start due to not being able to detect your HD or OS (and yes, I allready know my HD is failing :p )

Does anyone know anything about new HDs ? Im proably gona get one real soon..........

Well, I think it might be bad, yes.

As for new hard drives... well, depends on what motherboard you have and how much money you can spend. If your motherboard doesn't support Serial ATA, get an UDMA/133 HDD, but make sure it has 8 MB cache. If it supports SATA, get a SATA HDD, also with 8 MB of cache. Of course, make sure your new hard drive has speed at least 7200 rpm. If you don't mind paying a lot of money for a new drive, then buy Western Digital Raptor, the best hard drive ever. It's a SATA HDD, of course, it comes with 8 MB cache and its speed is mind-boggling - 10,000 rpm. With Raptor you will definitely feel an improvement in your system's overall performance.

That's all I can think of for now.

2 suggestions:
Western Digital 120GB Special Edition It's of course, Western Digital (reliable, long-lasting, fairly high performance) but also (loud, power-consuming, hot). This is my suggestion if your motherboard does not support SATA.

Seagate "Barracuda" 160GB SATAVery quiet, better performance than aforementioned WD one, lower power consumption, but far more importantly: SATA-150 Native Command Queing This will last you years into the future with satisfactory performance, but, as I said before, it requires SATA on your motherboard, (If I remember, NCQ is linked to the Southbridge, and thus the chipset, so if SATA is not on the motherboard[if you were using a converter], then NCQ could not work, or perhaps not even the drive.

Oh, and to finish off the thread title, it's bad when your computer starts up and smoke creeps out of the top. Yes, I've watched this happen.

I apologize for my harsh language, but....

Damnit ratty, this is exactly the kind of thing that has my #$%#ing grandmother with a P4 3.2E right now. That is: the lack of consideration for the use of the computer. A little old lady doesn't need a 3.2, I don't need (nor would accept, even if you paid me to) a Celeron, and Psycho doesn't need a raptor. Even more so, price notwithstanding, the barracuda will be far more useful. Unless he's wiling to have 2 or 3 raptors in his system, he won't have enough space (for comfort) to last him for years to come. Remember, his HDD just died, he isn't looking to have a performance drive for just system files and games, he needs one for everything. \

Once again, I apologize for my harsh language.

Apology not accepted. Prepare to be torn to pieces.

Somehow I knew you would say something like that. Hopefully it will be personally, so I dont have to deal with 1.1 million rats.

Have you installed Service Pack2? I got that message a couple of times after my own install, then they disapeared.

My apologies. I had assumed that he'd tried safe mode, and the normal, then protected mode. Psycho, have you?

If my HD is broken, that's nearly the end of the world to me...

Horrible, really.

If it's that bad why not run a RAID array, that way your chances of loosinging data are infintismal.

Jebus(not jebus the member, jebus the diety), it was just a speeling erorr. I meant that the chances are so small that for all practical purposes they are nonexistent.

What's a "speeling erorr"??

Never heard that before either!

I'm getting confused again!
Wooz, help me! Hold me!
*cries*

How ? The OS wont even load, muchless let me choose which mode to start in.

In 100% certain that the disk is dead, since it's been having a growing number of bad sectors over time.

And just so y'all know, Ive gotten a new laptop rather than just repair my 5yearold shitbox that died.

BTW, thx to all that replied, as I did checkl this once before buying aforementioned new laptop.

I was having problems with my HD yesterday. I took the comp apart and found a huge pile if dust and doghair over my chipset heatsink and other parts on the mobo. Took everything apart, cleaned it, and now it's all good.
