is it possible to disable "tough guy" mode?

First time out of the vault
hi, i've been playing through tactics in tough guy mode, but i'm now stuck on the macomb mission because the game crashes to desktop after a few hours, which doesn't give me time to finish the mission

i was wondering if anyone knows where the tough guy setting is stored in the save file, so i could hex it out

my system spec (in case anyone has any suggestions on preventing the crashes) is:
athlon xp2000
512 mb ram
256mb geforce fx 5600

As far as I know it's not possible to disable toughguy, what you can do is open up Macomb in the FT Tools level editor and tick the field 'is bunker'. This will allow you to save in game but not on the world map while in TG.

cheers for that - though i'm guessing later missions are going to take even longer, so i might be spending a fair bit of time in the editor =]

Hi,
I have had the same problem. It happens to me now in Jefferson again. Very frustrating because indeed it costs me hours.
I'll try deleting some save games, maybe lower the temperature in my room. But if anybody has an explanation as to why the game just crashes midway a level, I'd happily give them $20 for the solution right away, theoretically that is (because I'm not about to sollicit on a forum).

Reason, game's bugged, but then again aren't they all?

One of the biggest culprits seems to be overlapping tiles, in tough guy mode especially the more overlapping tiles a level has the more likely it's to crash.

Solution, well unless you want to rebuild all the maps in the editor to eliminate the overlapping tiles then there isn't really one. Someone on the Interplay forums did start to do so, but I don't think they finished.

I think by overlapping tiles you mean high buildings? That could be exactly it, because yesterday it crashed exactly when I was scrolling to get a look at a huge hangar sized building around the U-bend in Jefferson. :(
Thanks for the explanation. It is reaffirming, so I'll retry it (oh, I'm playing tough guy, btw) again tonight and be more careful (because I WILL finish this game, that is a promise!).

No not high buildings, you can't usually see it in game but when you put a map together each tile should be placed so that they are next to each other or above or below each other on different elevations, not occupying the same space.

Sometimes to prevent gaps, or usually in the case of the campaign maps, when placing invisible tiles the map builder has overlapped several tiles on the same elevation. This causes the tile to flash red in the editor and can cause lagging or even crashes.
