Is it still an unanswered question?

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
The infamous sixth level of some NPCs.. Vic, sulik, goris and dogmeat..

Present in the game files, but never appears in the game.

A shame, since it makes certain NPCs incredible (Sulik with 146 HP and 42% critical chance :-) or Vic with energy weapons as the main skill..

Also, the guys post "completion" comments on their final level ups (like Sulik's "I am the grandfather now" or goris' "I am the mightiest of my pack"). Those levels were meant to be achieved, that's for sure.

Wondering if this mystery will ever be solved.. it's like years since I reported this for the first time :D

hmmm..
Acually this might fall under the bugs catagory so maybe Killap can fix this? Maybe its hardcoded bug but I think if this could be fixed then it should be included in Killaps patch.

Well as I said I reported this 2 years ago.. wanted to know if it got finally fixed ;)

But I fear it did not ~~

Most of the people aren't even aware that some npcs can attain level higher than 5th (you can see the sixth level of Vic here: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vic#Stage_6 - he never attains that level ingame. The only way is to replace his fifth stage with his sixth stage forcefully - by messing up the crit files).

If I remember correctly there was a plan to fix it by creating an artificial 7th level (like in the old Miria mod) but it didn't work. NPCs do not level up above 5th level.

This bug was recently reported in the russian forums as well. Looks like an engine scope problem. Сolleague Mirny made a temporary workaround for that. But it's rather rough and simple. AFAIR, he just replaced 5lvl protos with 6lvl protos. So it's not the final touch.

I did exactly the same thing 2 years ago, too. But it kills the pleasure of having the NPCs level up as they were meant to ;-) You have to forget about either their 5th, or their final levelup. That sucks.

I am a fan of crowded parties in this game. I always have party size limit disabled and I travel with 6-7 best NPCs in the game, fully leveled-up. Fun to see how they kill more than I do. But it sucks that they are bugged.

I wonder if it ever gets fixed.

Oh, and btw.. Has anybody tried to fix their combat behavior? After killing one target, they just end the turn and don't bother, although technically they have the APs remaining for two more shots. Has it been fixed in any of the unofficial patches out there?

Wouldn't this fall under Timeslip's FO2 Engine Tweaks as it requires tweaking the exe?

I too would want to see this fixed as it would mean NPC's would hit me (or another member of my party) in the back less with brust fire.

And no, the NPC behavior in combat had not changed in Restoration Project as far as I could see in my last playthru.

The "missing levels" have been known for far longer than 2 years. It was in the Fallout Bible and known to modders before then (the FUCK utility dates back to 2000).

And it has been never fixed? That's kinda weird for a bug known so long.. especially with the engine fixes and source code revealed..

I beileve most of the players, who have not read walkthroughs and have beaten the game on their own, even now do not suspect that one NPC level is missing. It's just not a popular demand.
And in fact no source code is revealed for the engine. Just a minor part of the binary has been reverse-enginiered. So it's not that easy.

Well we will have to wait until someone makes a patch and destroys those bugs, in the meantime all modders should just clear the most meaningful bugs in the game

Looks like we'll never see a fix. This game is 10 years old and it still hasn't been fixed, so why do we even bother with waiting? ;]

I'm still curious. Why does it even occur, I mean, is it some mistyped variable or something more complex? Any guesses? ;-)

That's also an engine thing, I think. No critters switch targets in the middle of a turn.

The level up code for party members, and presumably the level 5 limit, is in the function starting at 0x495B60, if any other engine modders want to take a look at it. I might take a look sometime next week if I get a chance.

I've spent a bit looking at this, and I can get Sulik to reach level 6. Unfortunately, although he successfully gives his 'I am the grandfather now' line, he ends up with 999 hp and 99 action points instead of whatever he should have...

Probably not possible to fix. Although the game has no problems reading the level 6 level-up text, it doesn't seem to want to read the protos properly.

Thats a shame. While it would be nice to
have this working properly i have to say
i find i struggle to get NPC's to level 3 or
so. I find the chance of them leveling up
each time i level up is so small it rarely
happens.

Not everyone would mind that...

Josan - I usually save when I'm about to gain a level, and keep reloading until at least one NPC levels up. Some people might consider that cheating a bit, but it's not as reloading a hundred times until you steal that gauss rifle/vindicator/whatever.

hey, not bad, timeslip  Don't give up, perhaps you'll find a way to fix it - at least the NPCs level up to 6 now.

Perhaps there is a way to fix the incorrect proto reading as well.

I don't know a damn thing about modding games, so can someone explain to me what possibly can make the game fail to read data from a fixed file?
