Is the Restoration mod safe?

Streeca

First time out of the vault
I know there's a thread dedicated to the mod, but i'd rather have a simple question answered without having to read through 73 pages.

Is the Restoration thingie safe? Is there any risk at all it'll screw anything up? And if a risk exists, how do i make a back up of the game for such a case?

No, it's fine. You can't use old save game files with it though, so nothing to back up. As with any game or mod, in case of a bad install, just reinstall the game.

Thanks!

Wait... what? :=S I distinctly remember reading that i can install it and then continue playing from an existing save, but that, if i do this, some locations will not be affected by it, since the changes can only kick when the location is visited for the first time.
So now i'm confused. :=/

Why would you even want to use old saves with the RP mod? You would miss out on a lot of stuff.

Depending on what have been changed in different versions of the mod or the patches, the saves can be compatible and sometimes they are not.

The RP mod has killap's unofficial patch included, and if you are not using that already, or if you are using version 1.02.24 or 1.02.25 of said patch, it most certainly will not work.

If you are planning to to give the RP mod a try, I suggest waiting a few days for the next update.

cheers

Why? Well, because i'm in the process of playing Fo2 now. This is my second time. The first was 8 or 9 years ago. See, this is how long it takes for me to wanna replay a game i already played.
I'd sure like to experience all that missing stuff, but i don't wanna just drop all my current progress, and the likelihood that i'll wanna start a new game after i finish the current one is pretty low, even if the game will be changed {the changes aren't drastic enough to make it a completely different game, are they?}

But no, my game is unpatched. Guess that means i'm screwed. :={ Oh well, maybe i'll be bored enough to do it anyway. Failing that - maybe in a few years.

My suggestion:

1. Wait until Restoration v1.2 ("final") is released (soonish).
2. Start a new game with it.
3. Use a cheat utility to modify your character to match your character in your current game.

This way, you get the best of both worlds, right?

Oooh, i like your line of thinking, Tomten! Could i, using that utility, also mark some of the quests i already solved {the ones that are not changed in Restoration} as solved, so that i don't have to do them over again?
I might follow your idea even if i can't.

Sorry, I don't think so. You could give yourself "quest items" using the utility (I think) and go talk to people; that would maybe mark some quests as solved. But if it's newbie quests ("sharpen your spear" etc), maybe there's no point, since it won't affect future gameplay.

Pity. Oh well, i'll wait for the final version, and then decide. Maybe my fallout appetite will be renewed after i play Thief 3, which i'm getting soon.

Hey, i just found, while searching for something else, that there's a utility for converting unpatched savegames into patched ones. That could solve my problem, but i have the same question about it: Is it tsted? Can i be sure that, if i convert my savegames with it and patch the game, i won't just find myself with broken files i can't load?

I haven't used the utility myself, but I heard it works. Backing up your save game files is always a good idea.

Using this utility will allow you to use saves using the official 1.02 patch. These saves won't work with my unofficial patch nor my Restoration Project though.

The converter, apparently, has its flaws... :=/

Started a new thread about it, so that the title would match the content.
