Is there a 'drifter' mod yet?

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Okay, so I was playing around with Fallout 2 and used the method of finding the second Holy Grail encounter detailed in Per Jorner's "Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 Guide" (in the end section: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html#addenda), when I noticed that by doing this, you start with Narg and without the Vaultsuit, pipboy, and presumably without the main game quest. A few little tweaks with the Falche character editor and I had turned Narg into my regular character that I use in the normal game, and I was just wandering the wasteland in a sort of Mad Max esq pointless journey, without the main quest but still with all the subquests to amuse myself. Kinda fun, except the game don't like this and it crashes every so often.

But I kinda think that'd be a cool idea for a mod: one where you could just play as a regular guy (or gal) in the wasteland, going about his own business, and leave saving the world up to the chosen one off in arroyo, or even cut out that story entierly. Anyone got any idea how I could do that?

Sorry, a similar mod already exists, it's called "Fo2: Second Apocalypse". You can find it in the files section. It contains no quest and regular towns, you just wander the wastes battling foes and getting experience....

There are some hardcoded things you can't get rid of, e.g. Hakunin dream sequences and losing the game if you mess with Arroyo. Other than that, I figure you'd have to go through the scripts and dialogues, changing or removing all references to the player character being the Chose One and asking quest-related questions. Wouldn't necessarily be complicated, but a lot of work for no particular gain.

Well, there is a mod that goes along the lines of what you want. It is called "Wasteland Merc" You play the role of a mercenary going around looking for work from people.

In this mod you are not the chosen or vault dweller but a simple mercenary warrior that goes around in wasteland looking for missions/jobs. All missions/jobs are redoable and are intended to be done several times. If you come to a town and nobody seems to be willing to talk to you that means your not high enough level to get that mission. Than usually they will tell you to get bent or come back when you are better in various ways.

It is an alright mod (not a lot there but fun nevertheless) The way it is set up is that any time a Hakunin dream comes up you just get a black fade out for one second and it comes right back. Also, when the time comes that Arroyo must be destroyed the designers set up something different that happens to the first town you encounter (which is Arroyo in this sense) You will have to see what it is since I don't want to spoil it. The way a lot of the things are set up in this game (design wise) are kind of odd but it still functions well. I have not played the full 13 years so I am not sure what exactly happens then. Anyway, here is a link to their site as well as a copy of the mod. This one is one that I patched up. It includes their own patch/addition to the game as well as some corrections/fixes I made.

site: http://wastelandmerc.atspace.com/mods.html

my version: http://zcn.phix-it.com/wastelandmerc(killapedition).rar

If there are any issues with my version of the mod just let me know. Just unrar the file and copy all the folders to your fallout 2 ./data directory.

EDIT: You don't have all the additional quests from the game but ones they have added as well as tons of hard random encounters.

I've played second apocalypse, and don't particularly like it because of the lack of actuall towns, but as far as killing stuff goes it's cool. Just kinda got boring without quests. Though I admit, just playing the straight game without the main quest would get boring too once you ran out of sub quests.

Sounds like it's more complex than what I've done so far (I've only done a little bit of item editing and played with the mapper a little) but an interesting project to learn on, maybe.

Sounds like sweetness to me! Definatly gonna try it. But I still might make my own version for the heck of it. I've got plenty of story ideas for mods (see my thread in fan fiction on the movie I'm doing) so it could turn out interesting. Two questions on your version of the mod: first, is it compatable with the "Black Market" expansion that I just found for the origional verion? And also, where do I download a program to Unrar files? Thanks muchly, everyone.

You were already told. Google for "winrar" and the first hit will be the WinRar homepage.

My version comes with all their patches/addons (aka the black market addon) My version also comes with some additional bug fixes made by me. You were just told about unraring, so let me know if you need anything else.
