Is there any way to not kill kaga?

First time out of the vault
I'm using the Restoration pack v1.2, and apparently there are supposed to be 5 kaga encounters, but on the second one, he dies.

Is there any way to not kill him? When I regain control after the floating dialogue, he says his brain hurts, then takes like several thousand damage, then dies.

Then I can loot his body for a cheap rifle and some ammo.

You must have luck of 9 or higher? This was a "joke" diplomatic way to end the kaga encounters. In RP 1.2, there are three ways to deal with kaga. kill, peaceful talk down, or riddle.

RP 1.3 (soon to be released) has a completely redesigned kaga, so what I just mentioned will no longer be the case.
