Is White Label Collection worth buying?

First time out of the vault
Hi all,

I've been putting off playing Fallout for so long, it seems like forever now. When it first came out I was waist deep in a 2nd go round in school after getting burned by Atari (along with dozens of other developers) and swore I'd never use, much less code a computer outside of what was absolutely necessary for my studies. But I digress; most of you are too young to remember Atari Corp anyway. Back then the PC was a hunk of junk and windows was ... well it was a bad joke, relatively speaking. But enough of my ranting.

What I really wanted to ask is if the White Label Collection is worth buying with respect to playing the original Fallout and Fallout 2 as Interplay intended. i.e. uncensored. I'm not concerned about modern hardware problems or any probs from newer versions of windows as I've got more rigs than most people have coats. Every PC from the original IBM-PC, AT, 386SX, 486DX, every version of DOS from 1.1 to 7.0 and most versions of windoze from the laughable original thru XP.

So my plan is to play on a socket 478 P4 with win98se. So, again I'm just trying to decide whether to get an easily available copy of the UK White Label version and patch to remove censoring, or try to find a US Trilogy version that's (hopefully) uncensored. And by the way, I'm not really interested in any GOG type downloadable version as I'm still using dialup for one and I have a thing about wanting any purchased software to reside on a professionally pressed disc.

Well that's about it. And if anyone has read this far, you're ok in my book and I could really use some input on which version to go for.

Thanks,
bob

Isn't there a patch out there that adds all the features that got taken out with the censorship ? In that case it shouldn't matter, really.

US versions shouldn't have any censorship, and there are numerous fan patches to remove any censorship.

Be careful with newer stuff if you're using an old machine because the new patch might not be compatible with the old software.

Yes, US versions don't have any censoring, and it is also true that there are patches claiming to 'uncensor' the UK versions.

My 1st issue is that even though I live in Texas, there are no new US copies to be found, although the market seems to be flooded with censored UK versions available from American vendors on and off the net. The merchants I've contacted admit its because they are cheap and easy to find.

Secondly, as far as patching goes, I'm totally willing to go that route, but I'd like to confirm this works from someone who has successfully done it.

As far as my hardware goes, that's the last of my concerns. I have more computers than I know what to do with, one of which is modern enough to run FEAR and the Witcher at full settings, so I can't see these 2 old games being more demanding than that. As to OS, its more likely I'd have to roll back to 98 than upgrade to Win 7. Vista doesn't even merit being called a viable OS, so we'll leave that one alone.

Besides, just because I have old machines, doesn't mean I use them (except for when I need to run something that's hardcoded for obsolete hardware, what we used to call illegal programming).

Oh no, I just saw your post about running it on an older machine, and I was just saying that newer patches might be written with incompatible software.

Hoenstly you're really just better off getting it from GOG or something and downloading them off a friends internet or something. GOG kicks ass.

Unforturnately, GoG uses the same dim as the censored UK versions do. I just checked this out this week. On top of that its more expensive since I want all 3 games in the Trilogy/Collection. The vendor I talked to a few states over in Florida will sell me the White Box edition for about $10 postage included or about half what GoG would charge. Plus I'd have to mess with making my own CD's and they aren't quite free either.

On the plus side according to a thread at GoG, only Fallout 1 is censored.

Now if only someone who's actually used the patch would come along...

Guess I should've titled this thread 'Does uncensoring patch for UK Fallout work?'
