I recently found X-Wing Alliance for sale really cheap and felt like giving it a chance (having really liked Tie Fighter). For some reason, it seems to require a joystick (I haven't tried to get the mouse working on it instead, yet), and so I tried using my trusty N64 controller, which is connected through an adapter to one of the USB ports and recognized by Windows as a "4 axis 16 button joystick". It works with everything else I've tested it with, but I have one issue with it in XWA.
After assigning the buttons various functions and starting the game, everything works fine, except the control stick; moving it (in addition from making the craft turn correctly) causes the speed of the craft to be set to the closest level (1/3, 2/3 or full) of speed relative to how much the control stick is moved. For example, moving the control stick slightly to the right usually causes speed to drop to 1/3, unless it is already at that speed.
Moving it up/down seems to cause the craft to roll at the same time as it "ascends/descends". Moving the stick downwards, for example, causes the nose of the craft to rise, while at the same time rolling it counter-clockwise.
I have no other controller/joystick to try it with, so I thought maybe someone around here has any idea or previous experience that could help me.
