How about Italians driving too fast US blows them sky high and Italy demanding public apology from Bush himself? That’s always a good topic. Poor girl, 6 months hostage then released to be shot at by the "good guys" because you appeared to be a threat.

Yeah, I saw that in the news. You should probably make a new thread for that, though, if you wanna discuss it.

Done!

Really folks, this is your forum too. So feel free to start threads, not just respond.

I hear the Italian journalists thinks she was shot at by Americans because they are opposed to paying for hostages.

I know the Americans says she was in a convoy that ignored warnings and got shot at.

Or was it the CIA planning a bit of assassination of a woman who is only going to print anti- US news anyway?

Remarkable, some years ago an american kid was killed by Italian criminals. Instead of just burying the kid, his organs were used all over Italy helping numerous lives. When the family went around to see the lives affected it was quite an event. Good US-Italy relations.

And then this.

Someone fucked this up big time.

Iraq is not a safe place like some people want ma make it look like. It is a very dangerous place, there are terrorist attacks periodically. The US patrollers that shot the italian convoy putting about 300 rounds in the car the journalist was in, were freaked out, as they are every moment they are in patrol, because a bomb car could explode and blow them up in little pieces in any moment.

I saw a recording of an american patrol in a HUMM-V, they were nervous yelling at every car that came near them and firing warning shots. And that was normal traffic.

One of this days (if it did not happened already) they are going to shoot a car that drives at high speed, confusing it with a bomb car, and they'll end up killing a pregnant women that was on his way to the hospital.

The truth is that you can't really tell when it is a bomb car (they don't have it painted on the sides), and some apparently peaceful diver could rush for a check point, drop a bomb and BUM!

But if the US troops in the area were warned about the rescue operation why did they opened fire on them? Did they confused them? The patrol was not aware about the rescue because they were not properly informed? Did they freaked out and the situation went out of control? Or was there something else?

Actually, it's not just about the journalist. One of the higher ranking Italian intelligence officers was also in the car, and he got killed.

I think it's a bit farfetched that it was a planned assassination attempt, considering the inevitable international incident that we are seeing now. As Gonzales pointed out, the situation in Iraq isn't quite as stable as we're sometimes meant to believe, and in tense situations shit tends to happen.

I have no doubt, however, that the war in Iraq and possibly the USA, has just become even more unpopular in Italy, which may result in Italy withdrawing their troops earlier than anticipated.

Just my 2 cents.

Bah. This is sad, especially considering the fact that the security officer gave his life protecting the journalist, but the speculations around 'Maybe they tried to kill the journalist because she's anti-Iraq war.' are completely idiotic. They'd have to kill half the bloody world to stop those opinions, and killing her sure isn't going to help anything.

Hey now I think Welsh was just throwing out some ideas for us to feed our minds on, nothing serious.

I really feel bad for the guy that negotiated her release as well. He spent six months in hell to get her out. Finally Italy paid up (Very different policies when dealing with Terrorism than USA) and they were all on the home stretch. According to her the American tank pulled right up along side their convoy and started firing... A local radio talk show host (near me) Dory Monson put it; "To even consider that a US tank came out of no where and fired unprovoked is out right crazy. People need to understand MOST Italians drive like Indi car racers thus the Italian convoy may have appeared a bit more hostile to US forces.

The US forces involved claims to have attempted to hail them several times and were ignored.

I don't think the world needs to hear, "who what he she" right now... The very first thing should have been, "We are VERY sorry for what has happened. An investigation will be launched immediately."
After that I think it is safe to say a public apology from the President is in order no matter who is at fault just to be the better man.

Excactly. It really doesn't help the situation to blame the Italians for getting shot, especially when it's unclear what actually happened. It only serves to reinforce the view of Americans as being too arrogant that many people around the world have.

I thought Bush had already apologized. I may be mistaken, though, as I only had time to browse the article on the subway today.

The soldiers were crap and unprofessional. Mystery solved.

No doubt someone will work out why they deserved to be shot, because the US makes no mistakes it's bound to be their fault anyway. Probably secretly supporting terror or somesuch. Unpatriotic scum.

Well it seems there is a bit more than meets the eye here as well. Aberrantly the Italian reporter found out US troops were committing genocide. And the convoy was indeed hit because of the film footage she has. The guy that negotiated her release was shot point blank to the head his body fell on hers this is why she survived. So, again allot more meets the eye here.
