i could REALLY use some help getting "Fallout 1" to work correctly. i have the original cd which comes with both dos and windows versions .the first thing i do is i install the windows version and the game runs and has perfect sound but while i'm playing , the screen will go all black and i have to "paint'"the screen with the cursor to make everything show up again.Yes, i have read in this forum that i can use the pipboy or hit the F1 key to clear things up faster, but i have to continuously refresh it every second or two (literally) and it's VERY ANNOYING to say the least.i have tried running the game in both win 95 and win98 compatibility mode,and i have also tried everything mentioned in the sticky (disabling video card, closing background programs,etc.) but nothing is working
after giving up on that, i decide to try to install the DOS version(by running install.exe from the cd instead of setup.exe/autorun) .the first thing i noticed when the install screen appears is that the max i can choose to do is a "large installation" instead of "humongous "because it thinks that i only have 479 mb available hard disk space (when i have over 7 gigs free).. anyways, i let it install what it can then i manually install the rest from the cd to the default directory on my hard drive(C:/INTRPLAY/FALLOUT).
the game runs without any blackouts but NOW the sound is all screwed up (popping sounds, voices skipping, etc.) . i tried using vdmsound but when i right click on FALLOUT.EXE and choose "Run with VDMS" ,the loading screen will appear but then the game just suddenly freezes before it even gets to the intro movie or main menu.
ok,so i'll try running it using dosbox then. i double click on dosbox.exe then type :
mount c: c:\intrplay\fallout
c:\
dir
fallout
what happens ? dosbox gives me an error telling me that it can't find the damn master datafile !
FALLOUT.CFG currently looks like this :
[sound]
device=57344
port=544
irq=5
dma=1
music_path2=C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\data\sound\music
[system]
critter_dat=C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\data
master_dat=C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\master.dat
master_patches=C:\INTRPLAY\FALLOUT\data
art_cache_size=5
----------------------------------------------------------
my system:
windows xp w/ service pack 2
2.6 Ghz intel celeron
512 RAM
radeon 9200 (256 mb)
direct x 9c
drivers are up to date
i will also add that Fallout 2 runs fine on my system (no blackouts, perfect sound) and i don't even have to use compatibility mode - its just FO1 that i'm having problems with...i've pretty much given up on the windows version because of the constant blackouts (and i do mean CONSTANT) .it would be bearable if it only happened every minute or so (or even less) but it blacks out again almost immediately after i "refresh" the screen by continuously having to hit the f1 key to clear it up.. i would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this because i'd like to be able to play this game again with everything working the way it should (if possible)
windows version = screen goes completely black every few seconds ,but the sound is perfect.
DOS version = no blackouts , but sound is fucked up (REAL bad) . if i could just get the .EXE to start with vdmsound or dosbox, then i'm hoping that might fix it.
btw the version of Fallout i have is v1.1 (it's from the 2-in-1 combo pack that they're selling over @ gogamer.com)
