So, I need help with KoTOR II.

I'm running Vista Home Premium,
8800 GTS 640 mb OC
2.13 gHz Core 2 Duo
3 gigs RAM

I can start the game if I disable sound, but not otherwise...Is SuA or anyone else aware of a workaround or any patches or something to help?

Hrm. I haven't tried those yet on Vista. Other than some generic typical stuff (disable hardware acceleration, blah blah), I'm not sure what to suggest.

There's a thread over on LucasForums though, which back when I was into those games heavy, was *the* place for troubleshooting and mods and whatnot.

Might give it a look. Sounds like there were some other people having various sound issues --including only being able to run without any, and there are apparently some resolutions that have worked at least for some.

Dug up this:

I managed to resolve this problem on my system (Athlon 64 X2 3800+, Asus A8N-SLI Premium, GF 8800GTS/320 MB, Vista Ultimate 64-bit) by replacing the DLL running the Miles sound system with a New, Improved (TM) version. Now it starts up every time and appears to run completely stable, sound and all, in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode.

Specifically, I replaced Mss32.dll in the KOTOR2 program directory with the one you can download here: [ http://files.filefront.com/Mss32dll/;6695046;;/fileinfo.html ].

More information and other things to try here: [ http://forums.team-gizka.org/viewtopic.php?t=2098 ]. I didn't need to do the uninstall/re-install dance, but YMMV, make backups, always wear protection, and don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong.

Couple of other people confirmed it works.

I love you so much, Mad. I'm going to spend the rest of my days in tribute to your eXistenZ.

My only issues right now are with sound in movies, and sometimes dialog is skipped on the part of the AI.

Running very well when compared to how it was before, though...Previously I couldn't get past the first level thanks to crashes, abysmal frame rates, and corrupted save files.

I have to say that I love the writing in this game more than any other I've played recently. The HK is my favorite robot ever.

It really is a rather good game cursed by the developers' over-ambitiousness and the rushed production schedule. Too much was cut. I'm waiting to play it again when Team Gizka's mod is released. Supposed to fix a lot of issues, and put back in a fair amount of the cut content.

And HK-47 rocks, no doubt about it.
