KOTOR II on PC Worth It?

Wept for Zion
Hello all. If you've read any of my posts before you know I absolutely love Obsidian. They're probably my favorite game company next to Nintendo, Rareware (well, before they were shipped off to Microsoft anyway), and Valve. I'm also a big fan of Star Wars however. I've never really been into Star Wars games that much though outside of Battlefront 1 and 2, those games were a big part of my childhood.

Recently though, after lurking around old forum posts on here, I began seeing this game Knight of the Old Republic II cropping up in conversations regarding Fallout 4. Mainly about how much better the characters are written, and how it's made by Obsidian.

I looked on Steam, and lo and behold, there it was for purchase. Thing is though, a lot of the negative reviews say the game is filled with bugs and crashes really often. I honestly don't mind crashes too much as long as I can get through the game without it crashing very often. New Vegas crashes for me every couple of hours but it's still one of my favorite games ever. I can't get the original on PS2 because my PS2 broke a couple of years back.

So my question is to you guys, is it worth it? Should I risk trying to get it even though it might be full of bugs? Are the story/characters/etc worth it?

If you love Obsidian AND Star, Wars, fuck yeah.

The only problem is that, just like usual, Obsidian had bad luck with the editors so the ending of the game was rushed. I personnally played with a great mod restoring cut content, but the end still seemed a little bit incomplete, I can't even imagine what the game looks like without it.

Still, KOTOR2 is a classic. It really explores the Star Wars universe in a way other than "good Jedi vs evil Sith"

I liked KOTOR I & II very much. Fantastic storytelling and choice but not so great combat gameplay, pause real time, not my forte but I made do cause the rest of the game more than makes up for it. Graphics are pretty dated compared to games today but gameplay still makes up for it.

yes it's worth it, and there are mods to help with the bugs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=485537937

Thanks, that should be helpful!

If you dislike the idea that the Jedi are fantastic and Sith are evil, then this game is for you.

So basically it has the whole "grey" moral system of Fallout: New Vegas making it so none of the sides are purely righteous or purely evil? I like that a lot.

Sounds like Vampire: The Masquerade to me. Fantastic game, one of the best I've ever played, but nearly impossible to get through the whole game without the restoration patches that fix a loooot of bugs and restores cut content. I'll definitely have to look for that, thanks.

Play KOTOR 1 first, then play KOTOR 2 with the Restored Content Mod.

The problem with KOTOR 2 is there is a lot of missing content in the game that the Restored Content Mod puts back in. Also, the games do not come with widescreen support so you will either have to use some kind of mod for that or play it at the regular resolution.

I think KOTOR 1 and 2 are among the greatest games ever made, and are absolutely the best Star Wars RPGs ever made. The writing and characters in these games are as good or better than the films. I'm still playing them. Both are available on GOG as well as Steam.

There's something I forgot to mention: thegameplay is eh...mediocre at best. You get completely overpowered not too far during the game though, so it's not much of a problem.

As for KOTOR 1, I found it to be an average game honestly. Average gameplay, average story... Still, it's worth doing if you have nothing better to play or are a big Bioware/Star Wars fan.

I keep hearing of that game, I'll need to play it one day. There's too many good RPGs and not enough time.

Hm.. if that's the case, do I need to play KOTOR I to understand what's going on in KOTOR II? Or is it one of those games where the sequel has no bearing on the previous title?

You should definitely try out Vampire the Masquerade, it's truly a classic. Each of the races in the game make for a truly unique experience because of how different they are from one another. My personal favorite is Tremere.

KOTOR 2 is about as thought provoking as anything set in the Star Wars universe is ever likely to get.

I haven't actually played KOTOR 2 with mods yet and it's still excellent - right up until the endgame, which is possibly the most rushed and incomplete part of any game I've played unfortunately.

Well, the events of KOTOR are referenced a lot, but there is enough exposition for you to understand them. Apart from that, a few characters from the first one come back, but nothing major.

You should play KOTOR I and KOTOR II to get the full experience. It is worth it because there is some story reference/continuity and returning characters. And it's also one of the best games ever made.

It will not be the same experience if you only play KOTOR II.

I second that you should play both. They fit together pretty well and they're both excellent. As for KotOR II being buggy, it certainly was bad software at launch (it was rushed to meet a holiday deadline) but the community patch that I think was rolled into the current version fixes almost everything. It's a much better game now than it was when it was first released.
