KOTOR Review

I'm getting it for my birthday on the 18, only a week or so away, and I can't WAIT!!! I've read every single review, seen it played, and it looks phenomanal!

There are few FO fans that don't seem to enjoy this game. It's just fun. One of my favorite RPGs of all time.

BTW, as is often said about KOTOR, when Saint P. posts a mostly positive review about a Bioware/X-box port/Starwars game....you KNOW you have to give it a look.

My thoughts exactly. I'm just starting it - so far I'm not too impressed though, it just makes me feel like I should be playing Jedi Outcast instead.

Where are you at in the game?

Because the ship is almost all combat, once you get on planet things get much better, imo.

I'm just past the ship, so I can't judge the game yet. It does have two things that I really hate though, although they aren't unexpected:

(1) In-game tutorials. It just ruins the immersiveness of any game, especially when an NPC breaks character and starts telling you to "click the right mouse button to perform free look".

(2) Pause n' Play combat. I really feel that if a combat system is in real time, the options and controls should be appropriate to real time, ditto for turn-based. I don't want to play an FPS in turn-based and I don't want to play a deep combat system in real-time. Pause n' Play is just barely tolerable for me, and so far it's been a big factor in lessening my enjoyment of every Bioware game and makes me stay far, far away from any RTS game.

I don't doubt that other things in the game will make up for it, but these two things irk me pretty badly. On a lesser note, the d20 system just doesn't seem to mesh with Star Wars for me. When I see d20 I think of D&D, and it just makes me think that KOTOR is just another Bioware D&D game with a Star Wars skin covering it.

Updated impressions:

Combat: By far the best implementation of "pause-based" combat in any Bioware game. I'd still rather have it turn-based, but this time around it's actually pretty enjoyable. Best of all character's animations actually match up to the commands you give them, or are at least closer than in previous BW efforts.

Dialogues: So far I've found that a good amount of the options are window-dressing and have no real affect on how the character you're talking to responds. This is only my first play-through so I haven't explored them too thoroughly, but they seem to be on the same level as NWN and Baldur's Gate.

NPC's: Overall pretty good quality and selection, although the fact that you can only use 2 at a time regulates most of them to "replay challenge" characters, ie - "I'll see if I can beat the game using only Mission and the wookie this time around!"

Items: It's pretty funny that every melee item has a "rare" cortosis weave that allows it to be used in combat with lightsabers. Note to Bioware: "Rare" and "Common" don't mean the same thing. Also, it's fairly annoying that by the time you have enough money to afford any powerful items they aren't worth buying. I should also mention that the only way to earn a significant amount of money is through two mini-games: a blackjack variant and a racing game, neither of which interest me very much.

Above objections aside this is one of the funnest RPG's I've played in awhile, and I highly recommend it - all the praise it's been getting is well-founded.
