Lasher of the children guy, screwing me?

A couple of days ago, I started playing Fallout 1 again. I decided to do things I didn't do last time I played Fo1, One of the things I never tried is Talking to Morpheus in the Cathedral, I always killed Morpheus and the nightkin dudes.
I talked to "Lasher of the children", he gave me the "COC amulet/key" and told me to show it to the nightkin if they stopped me. well, they didn't seem to care about the
"COC amulet", they just attacked me as soon as I went up the stairs.
Are the Lasher of the children guy trying to get me killed, or is he trying to help me?

make sure your wearing a purple children of the cathedral thing, else they will try to kill you

IIRC, it will help you get up the stairs but once you enter the rooms you are on your own.

I did wear one of those purple "children of the cathedral things", They didn't seem too care about my robes.

Hmm, for as far as I know, all you need is one of those robes, and the COC badge. Then, you shouldn't be attacked before talking to Morpheus. Obviously, if you want Morpheus to help you in any kind of way, you'll have to convince him.

From what I know you have to be alone (so no Dogmeat, Follower scouts or other party members).

That's definitely your problem, you HAVE to be alone. I wanted to finish the game this way, and i had to take dogmeat out into the wastes and -sniff- put him down. So no CNPCs.
