Leon interview 2

Gamespy also decided to interview Leonard Boyarsky regarding the recent Troika announcement, here's a tidbit:
GameSpy: Troika has been around for several years, and had three good titles under its belt. Why do you think you weren't able to secure funding for your next project?
Boyarsky: I'm not sure, you'd have to ask the publishers. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because triple A titles are costing more and more to make, and people are looking for titles that will appeal to a more mainstream audience than ours have traditionally. In plain English, our games just didn't sell enough units.

GameSpy: What's next for you?
Boyarsky: I have absolutely no idea. Any suggestions?
I have one, Bethesda buy Troika and use it as a sub division!

Any Bethesda Dev's here?? These ought to be your co-workers...

They do post here from time to time, and I think some read the forums much more often than posting. However, as Troika just reminded us, the gaming industry remains as cut throat as always. With games getting more and more expensive to make there is little room for charity. Plus, Beth has their own ideas for creating Fallout 3. As much as it might seem like heresy, I think its better for games if everyone is on the same page of what they are doing. If you try to mix artistic visions you end up getting an eyesore, if you follow my reasoning. So, if hiring ex-Troika as a consultant(s) is only a show for fans, that just not good business.

That being said, if they do actually hire some I'd be all the more impressed by Bethseda's class!

They haven't decided everything yet, really. They are still in the pre-planning phase as they have reminded us repeatedly. So at this state there shouldn't be much of a conflict. Keep in mind, Beth isn't moving towards Fo3 until Oblivion is done. So hiring Troika at this time wouldn't cause much in the way of design/idea conflicts. Besides, the founders of Troika are currently unattached, highly experienced developers with experience in both management and design and in the series they'd be working on (keep in mind, Beth has the rights for three fallouts, not just one), so Beth would be gaining highly skilled employees if they decided to make it a permanent relationship.

It wouldn't be just a venture to appease the Fo fanbase (most of us are too cynical to be easily appeased). Tim, Leonard, and Jason also would be very into the project as they have stated. It's always good to have employees who are more interested in the product than the clock. Fallout fans would also win too, since the advice they'd have would put Beth closer to the right track. We saw what having too few people experienced in the Fallout games does to the game (play Fo:T again if you forgot).

MY GOD ODIN YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN! !!!!

This is not only the MOST logical thing for Beth to do it is the right thing to do.

Beth says they look up to alot of the guys from Troika... Well god damn how the hell would you like to work with them? I know I would. That would tickle me beyond words...

Maybe thats just it, the whole Bethesda buying Troika is too Hollywood for reality. That kind of thing only happens in those fantasy worlds where everything works out in the ways it should... Wow, there is so much to be gained here, and NOTHING to be lost... Think about it. Who better than some of the guys that made FO1/2 to help you out with the project. Its unreal!

I gotta go to sleep too much work, Odin gonna try to send some cash your way soon for donation.

I think it doesn't make any sense "buying" troika... It would be much more obvious if they hired the three founders, now that would be some good news

But... Has Bethesda enough money?

Bethseda is a publisher/developer, and they are doing quite well, as I understand it. Their obvious claim to fame is Morrowind and its two expansions, which sold rather well. I don't know how many people they have on staff, but its a lot more than Troika did at their height.

I would be very surprised if they hired The Troika Trio. They'll want their own stamp on the project if they plan on making it into another franchise.

Bethesda have been publishing for a while. Daggerfall sold well too, they have a couple of TES spinoffs, they made sea dogs, they're publishing Call of Cthulhu, making sea dogs 2, they published Pirates of the Carribean (which Disney made them put out right after the movie, it's...buggy). They have plenty of money.

Would they fund a post-apocolyptic rpg to compete with their own post-apocolyptic rpg? doubtful. Maybe they'd do the fantasy/Source engine thingy that Leon mentioned. Or maybe Irrational will make enough off of FF2 to publish them. Also doubtful.

As Leon said, Troika reforming anytime in the future is doubtful.

oh god dont remind me of Pirates Of The Carrabian... awful AWFUL game. Who said anything about letting Troika make their own game to compete with FO3? If I were in Bethesda's position I would bring them on the team. That would seem more logical to me.

Leon is the man ... in my mind he's the da vinci of gaming. The other games all look the same. The future of the 50s was beyond a cool game idea, it was art in its finest. I'm certain Leon and the boys will find a way to continue their great work.

Buying troika and using it as a subdivision? Or even just acting as a publisher? Right now all they have are the three founders (sort of), some pre-production ideas/docs, and a tech demo. The project they are (were) trying to make was a post-apocolyptic rpg, much like I hope Fallout 3 to be. Not a good idea to compete with your own products. Maybe if they were released a year or more apart.

Leon also mentioned a fantasy demo in the Computer Games Mag interview. Of course, that would be in comptetition with Oblivion.

AGAIN I stress WHO SAID anything about letting Troika make their RPG that would compete with FO3? Would it not make more sence to bring those guys on the FO3 project? If you ask me we all would not have any doubts about the game with guys like that in the mix... I mean come on... what are the chances of another Deus Ex 2? LMFAO

Actually I was responding to the original idea of buying Troika and using them as a subdivision. This implied to me that they would work on things other than bethsoft's two current flagship rpg's - Oblivion and Fallout3. Most likely things using their own engine and devdocs. Buy if you're just talking about hiring Troika's principles for Fallout3, then sure, great idea.

Though the seeming fact that Todd Howard lied about consulting old Fallout people about F3 doesn't bode well. Maybe he meant MCA, or Sean Reynolds, or Chuck.

Actually, the implication was that they would be working on Fallout 3. There must be a short in your logic circuits.

Or I'm just wired differently, and don't think there's anyway in hell that Beth would let Troika make Fallout 3. Maybe consulting (though they haven't), but not make.

Let's see, they haven't contacted any of the Troika folks, they ditched the in-development engine and material of Van Buren, they're writing the design right now and planning on using they're own engine which they're much more familiar with now than the troika folks would be in six months of using it, Troika hasn't built up the best reputation for their stability and leadership - regardless of their fault, yadda yadda yadda

Logic circuits operational.
