Let's Play Fallout 1!

bitwise

First time out of the vault
I'm new around these parts, but have been a Fallout fan since the bombs fell. Sadly, I've not seen any decent LPs of Fallout around on YouTube yet. I've started making one of my own, and wanted to ask for some community input on it and could think of no finer place than NMA.

edit: Here's an embed of the playlist:

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Youtube is not a place to get good let's plays from, unless they're actually from another place and only moved to youtube because they Blip.tv cut them (for some reason) or vimeo/viddler had issues with them or some shit. It's the last resort for video hosting, and Fallout is a much more screen-shot oriented LP. There's a couple of amusing ones for FO3 floating around the net, especially here or on RPGCodex.

What? Actually for old Fallouts lets plays are better than AAR with screenshot.
I made some time ago AAR from Fallout 1 and well, imho videos from my gameplay would better show everything than screens and my descriptions.

I've watched many good LPs on YouTube, and disagree that it's a 'last resort'. I also believe that you can make a good LP of a game with screenshots and writing or with video; much of it comes down to personal preference and the LPer's abilities.

As I said, I'm actually asking for input on my Fallout LP in specific.

There are only 3 episodes so far, but I'm currently uploading more. Any input you guys have for them would be much appreciated.

Not a lot of comments, apart from the fact that a Canadian accent always seems to add something to an LP. I do have a question, though-- HOW? I've made a stab or ten at Fallout vids and LPs, but the game doesn't seem to play well with most FRAPS clones. I've never managed to get a video as smooth and synched as yours, and I've not once managed to record the intro scene. The game stonewalls me every time.

I had the exact same problem. The first couple videos I made were years ago and for some reason the setup I had at the time worked fine; now that I have a newer computer, it stopped.

After a lot of trying out every darn patch and every darn workaround I could find online, I finally found that running the DOS version of Fallout in a DOSBox window allowed me to record that part of my screen. The unfortunate things about this setup is that the max resolution I can get is 600x480, and the latest version I can play is version 1.1 (it's the last patch that was made that to work with the DOS version).

I made a video outlining how to do so, if you're interested:

As a bit of an aside, would anyone care to collaborate with Fallout Let's Plays to make a sort of mash-up?

Why not use fallout fixt? Or does that not solve compatability issues?

Also, if you want to make a let's play worth watching, I would suggest doing more than commenting on the mechanics and your decisions. We all know the content and gameplay of the fallouts on this forum. So some kind of narrative or comedic element would give us some incentive to follow this.

To be fair I've seen little so I could be completely wrong, you already having done this perhaps.

So far you explain the stats and things you see, is that because you're making more of a let's play for non fallout fans who want to know what this is all about, or a walktrough-ish thing?

The compatibility issues we're talking about are with the screen-recording software.

It's supposed to be accessible to those who haven't played the Fallout games. I started making this LP long before I started posting on NMA, back when there were actually no other Fallout 1 LPs on YouTube.

I agree with your comment that my first videos start off very game-mechanics-focused, which I imagine is why I had so many views on my first episode, but not very many on the following ones (especially now that there are other Fallout 1 LPs on YT). I have tried to comment less on mechanics and more on story in my more recent recordings, which I've yet to have edited and uploaded due to a lack of motivation. I'm hoping some new viewers from NMA will help with that.
