Light Power Armor

These are some sketches I did of an idea I have for a suit of light power armor. Maybe for scouts or people who simply don't need as much protection. The idea I had behind it was it being more segmented like a lorica segmentata than the standard armor which involves large plates.

The head is composed of three sections: neck piece, side piece, and top cover. The cover opens upward on pneumatic springs when the catches are pressed. The face shroud clips to this cover and the side pieces. The neck piece (and thus the whole helmet) is connected to the rest of the armor through a material like kevlar which allows the area around the neck to breath, be flexible, and be protected. Air would enter the suit through the filter on the face shroud and through the hoses attached to the side piece to the power pack.

These are pretty rough sketches and this is only the second human figure that I've really tried drawing so sorry for the crudeness. Expect more, and possibly better, drawings in this thread later. You can see a bad drawing in paint of the face shroud in the Art Contest thread. Thanks. - Colt

the comic serie Aquablue has some sweet Light Power Armors in it (the parts with the Legionairs). also the coolest Heavy Power Armors i've ever seen...

if you know the series you might wanna get some inspiration from that.

I'd suggest having the helmet more based on the power armour from fallout1 instead of the enclave armour, but maybe that's just a matter of taste, though...

No, never even heard of that SuAside... I'll check it out though.

Here's the bad sketch from Paint just for reference: http://img66.exs.cx/img66/240/shroud.jpg

I was actually thinking of the T-51b armor when I was drawing this but the problem with trying to make it resemble that armor is that the helmet looks like a really cool and souped-up bucket. The same thing can be said about the Enclave armor also though that helmet is more shaped. Pretty immobile looking.

The diamond-shaped thing on the bottom front of the face shroud is supposed to be the filter. You would pull down on it to remove it and be able to clean it that way. I was thinking of that because if the filters for the Enclave armor seem to be on the back of the suit... So what happens if you are knocked over and it gets sand in it, and you can't take your suit off to clean it?

well, in Aquablue 4 there is an assault legionaire uniform that could help you form a better version of you visor. the armor itself isn't really powered and the arms are barely armored, but it does have a breathing system and a nifty visor design.

as for the heavy power armor (read tank) it's pretty damn cool, although it might not be as realistic and usefull 8)

it's a french comic though, so you might have problems finding something about it (i know it's distributed in france, belgium and the netherlands by Concorde. further than that i cant help you)

edit: here is a preview of the heavy armor:

aquablue%204.jpg

right arm and hand has a normal shape to wield the gatling gun positioned on his back. the left arm has clawlike fingers and enhanced structure for heavy duty work (pulling out or shredding trees, turning over cars, clearing a way for an LZ...). the pictured size is not really accurate (the suit is about 140-150% taller than a human). it's meant to be dropped out of a dropship at about 50 meters altitude, land unharmed without any kind of parachute and clear the way for a ground assault.

Wow. That things more like a mech than power armor. Awesome looking though. I looked on Amazon for this stuff but all ov the covers shown there show stuff that looks really low-tech. Hmm... And GIS isn't hellping either. Maybe if you have the French name for it I can find something.

I've already made a few changes to what I think it will look like though the helmet isn't really different. I just need to take the time to draw this stuff. - Colt

I like your power armor's helmet better, Colt. It looks more retro, as in quasi-futuristic. And the skull's head face is alot more ominious than the futuristic helmet with a single line visor on it.

hehe, i did say the heavy one was more like a tank than a powerarmor ;)

Aquablue is the french and dutch name for the series so it doesn't matter. (the album is called "corail noire" in french, "zwart coraal" in dutch)

as for the other comics, the covers seem low tech but most of em arent ;)
however, they aren't interesting as a case study for armor (the fifth volume has some power armors, but they arent what you are looking for)

if you remind me i'll scan the relevant passages of the comic for you (but i'm only going to my dad in two weeks so you'll have to hang on a bit ;) )

That would be nice of you... Going to your dad? Vacation?

nope, no vacation (i wish :P ). usually i drop by each weekend, but because of his job he travels a lot, so he wont be home until then.

just remind me, mkay? (i tend to forget such things quickly :) )

Nice, but pretty different from the PA we know and love.

One thing I would note is that the US flag on the right shoulder should be the other way around, yes, I know that would make it "backwards", but that's how they are on US military uniforms.
The reasoining for that is that the flagpole is on the stars side, so a flag carried into battle (by a standard bearer) would therefore have the stars facing forwards. Having the stars backwards would make it look like they were retreating.

No, I don't know why I noticed that either.

i dunno about you americans, but us belgians bypass the whole issue by putting it on the left shoulder instead of the right ;)

They have it on both shoulders, both with the stars edge facing forwards.

Is there even a Belgish army?
Or a flag?

both shoulders? and thats useful how?

and of course we have an army! belgium was founded as a bufferstate between the jerries and the frogs, so we need an army.
we are the official airbag for those lovely countries. by the time we get squashed like a bug, they have the chance to sort out their defenses. :P

So you can tell which country they are from from either side?
I dunno, I didn't design the damned things.

Actually, I totally forgot about that. This is the Fallout universe though... :P

^ lame excuse for not paying attention to detail in a sketch.

if you have to check the flags on the side of the uniform to identify your enemy you'll soon be in a world of hurt imo
