First time out of the vault
No one else has posted this topic (as far as I can tell).

Will there be a native version or not? Will I have to resort to using Wine?

I really don't want this to turn into a war about platforms, I just want to plant a thought into Besthesda's developers that some of us out here actually use Linux daily. (No, I don't dual boot)

Several good engines are available that support Linux:
Unreal 2004
NWN
Doom3 (soon)

Bear in mind that I'm talking engines here, not content. Also note that the devs can manipulate the first person perspective games into a isometric 3D game.

Anyway, just giving voice to a minority here.

(Walks over to the footlocker, whistling, and starts putting on Power Armor that's especially heat resistant.)

NWN supports Linux? Only with a client. BioWare's developers have enough challenges with using Windows APIs, don't make them think they actually know how to code.

I also like games whose creators have made it possible to port them over to another OS without problem.

Also note that the devs can manipulate the first person perspective games into a isometric 3D game.

That was your only warning.

The only thing that isn't available on Linux, for NWN, is the toolset. The game client and server work fine.

I don't get the warning. Please explain or post a link to the flame-fest that you're apparetly referencing.

I believe he was warning you about any future posts that are like that quote or say things like it.

I don't think that means Rosh wants to eat your guts and then have seconds, linux-boy. It's just that it (3D and perspective) has been widely discussed before, and there is really nothing to add.

So, if you are really curious, you should use the seaqrch function toroughtly and then, if you think you have a really great point that hasn't been discussed before.... well then, it's your guts, you can risk them at will

Ahh, ok. No prob. Sensitive topic I see. A question of style. A perfectly valid concept for a game.

Well, time to move on to another thread.

I second that. Both statements, actually.

Several new games slowly get better support for Linux, would only be fair to do make FO3 native.

next time, edit your previous post instead of double posting.

i find this comment pretty weird...

i've noticed old timers (meaninglessly) double post CONSTANTLY without anyone saying something, now this guy does it once and he gets reprimanded.

double standards have gotta go homeboyz

PS: yes, this is a reference to CCR... i really cba about what he does at the order, but he does it at general discussion. he usually makes double posts less than 1 minute after his original one ... most of the time just adding crap instead of content

CCR is not an old timer...he's an older n00b.
And he should edit his previous post.

I don't really think it was as much of a reprimand as a warning/advice. It's best to catch bad habits early.

How many people use linux anyway? And, in particular, how many gamers?
If it's 5% of PC users but only .5% of gamers, then IMO it's not really worth devs time to make a linux version. Unless it is fairly quick/simple to convert a program to run in Linux.

Or possibly it's something that could be done by a fan and made available at the devs website (in this case Bethsoft).

It's quite easy to simply make a program to be OS-independent, then it only needs to be compiled seperately for each OS. Sadly, no games programmer does this, because they use DirectX (something which is, IIRC, not useable in Linux and UNIX environments) and tend to use the Windows API. Bah.

It's really just a matter of ignorance.
Why bother producing an XP (=Cross Platform) game if Windows dominates the home computer market?

Of course they could use OpenGL instead of DirectX, but that'd mean they'd have to learn it, as I doubt that every DirectX oriented programmer knows how to do the same magic with OpenGL. The Windows API is the default in most programming utilities for Windows anyway..

Why produce a cross platform game? Specifically, for Linux?

Lack of competition. I have four games I play on Linux, two via Windows emulation in Wine. I would snatch up a Linux - based (average or better quality) RPG in a second. (Actually I already did, NWN and both expansions, and yes it's *average*)

The other three are: UT2004, Fallout 1 & Fallout 2

Have been meaning to try to run Planescape:Torment or even TOEE under Wine but haven't yet tried either.

... sorry for the tangent.

I would be willing to bet that other Linux users would as well since a lot of them, unlike me, have a dual boot system and only go back to windows to play games instead of fooling around with Wine. They would jump at the chance as well to avoid the hassle.

... but yes, it is still only a guess because there are no solid numbers for Linux.

Commercially speaking this is uninteresting. The amount of people using Linux is 5% of the market, and the amount of Linux gamers is near to 0%, simply because any gamer knows that all interesting games are made for windows. The system, as with many things microsoft, is self-perpetuating. From the perspective of Bethesda, it's commercially uninteresting if it costs them time and money to train people to make the game cross-platform (teach them not to use the Windows API and teach them to use OpenGL)

This is true, I"m betting most people on my faculty will be doing that. But all of them would still run Windows because of the other games (and other problems). They won't pass for the game because it won't run on Linux, and it would therefore still be uninteresting for Bethesda to do this.

People, please tell me, what the fuck is this thread doing in the FO3 suggestions/ideas forum?
