Losing Experiance

I know this sounds a bit stupid... but instead of always gaining experiance, how about you lose it.

Instead of gaining 25 points for lockpicking, how bout losing 15 for each failure.

Also, I think exp. should be changed in other ways too. Like for instance you kill enemies but take no damage/little damage you'd get more exp. then if you barely survived with 1 HP.

Depending on how well you did something should also be included. Say you found the GECK in 1 month, you'd get a huge exp. reward, but in 1 year it would be significantly different.

And 1 more idea. If you use a gun for a long time. e.g. shotgun you should become familiar with that gun and be increasingly better at it. This has nothing to do with skills and only applies to that type of gun. If you want, just THAT gun. This would make less 'super weopons'. Because even though that bozar packs a punch, your magnum has 95% chance to hit anywhere and can cause critical hits almost each time.

Watcha think?

I don't think you should lose xp. Gamewise yes it would be more challenging, but who wants that? Besides it's illogical to lose experience.

Your other ideas though are original and new (something very rare), and I agree and support all of them, although they would take more out of the development time if there is going to be a Fallout 3.

Agreed. Losing exp is imbalanced and a touch awkwards anyways. After all, do we not learn in part from our mistakes?

Other than that...hmmm...I was thinking of perhaps Daggerfall's skill/exp in Fallout, which would work nicely.

I'm afraid the only thing losing XP for failures will achieve is feverish Save/Loading.

As for the criticals... Nice idea!

zero-x's bitter words after his encounter with roshambo:

"I agree with you but there comes a fuckin point i dont know who roquirbo thinks he is but I at least you didnt really criticize me and i appreciate that i hate people who fuck with my ideas when i didnt say shit to em and yes he is the kind of guy i would take a scalpel tear his head open the take an hammer use the end to samsh through the medulla and use the nail pull as a pry to pull back the top of the skull revealing a brain (small but brain nontheless)and take desert eagle magnum and blow it through his fucking spine as he still breath and then rip out his heart and show him how black it is before he dies but as you said thats illegal well cya"

Weapon familiarity is a damn good idea. I know from my army weapons training that familiarity makes a big difference with your accuracy.

I was actually thinking about that dont we learn from our mistakes thing before i posted that. Didnt think losing exp. was my best idea, but I posted it just to see what you guys think.

Anyway Ive never played Daggerfall, so could you plz explain its skill/exp system?

And yes weopon familiarity does make a massive difference. I mean, its not logical that if you pick up a minigun, you'll be able to use it perfectly 1st time. Although a lot of things in fallout arent logical (or maybe realistic is a better word) but lets not go into that (after all, how bad would game be if you died after 1 shot from a gun).

well, the most realistic thing would be to gain experience also when you fail, but who would want that?

>after all, how bad would game be if you died after 1 shot from a gun
Ever tried Rainbow Six ?

I meant how bad would Fallout2 be if you died after 1 shot from a gun. I havnt played Rainbow Six though, but thats different, i mean you dont play for days/weeks/months maybe even years on it, do you? (With 1 character)

Heh, like the constant routine of saving/loading to achieve a steal action. That was tedious, but rewarding.

Wel, I think you should only lose XP after getting knokked out or when you get drunk or something like that.
