Mac OSX problem on exit game

Sy

First time out of the vault
Another question, again on a Mac running OS 10.2.8, G4 powerbook, relatively new machine w/ lots of memory, etc.

When I wish to stop playing (I know: why God?) either Fallout or FO2, going through the menus and selecting exit game from the main screen with the powerarmor figure at right, the game quits but stalls partway through so that I get a black screen. The game essentially freezes on the black screen, such that the only way to get out of either game (again: why God?) is to turn the computer off and on again. None of the tricky Mac application killers seem to work either.

I've installed the current patch, reloaded the game, started over with new games, etc. I've been playing this way for months now. I know, I'm a greenhorn.

The best solution I've found is to keep a corrupted game saved in one slot that the game doesn't recognize as corrupted. When I want to stop playing I load that game and the thing crashes. Voila! I'm back to my desktop.

There must be a better way. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't know if it works on a Mac (I've never had to use one), but I generally exit by pressing "Esc" from the main menu. It seems to be quicker (both physically & for (un?)loading times).

Good tip--but that produces the same effect. Whether I hit the little red exit button or hit the "Esc" key while on the main menu, I get the black screen. The game seems to freeze while quitting.

You can't wait out the black screen, either. Damned black screen!

I play Fallout 2 on an iBook using OSX 10.3 and I've no problem whatsoever.
You said you tried all the possible kill functions. Have you tried to use these while the game is still running or as soon as you get a black screen? Otherwise try using the terminal and type 'kill'. Then select the Fallout application to kill it.
A thing I wasn't aware of is that there's a Fallout 1 version for Mac too. As of now I only thought Fallout2 was available. Where on earth did you find it?

That helped--actually while flipping through my guide to OSX to figure out how to bring up the terminal I found a way to bring up the force quit screen that I didn't know about. It didn't bring up the force quit menu so I can select Fallout 2, but it did kill the application.

I don't understand this whole thing--repeated reinstalls, both FO and FO2...I'm satisfied if I can crash it to get out.

I found the original game for Mac new online, I think I paid 10$ for it. I got it relatively recently, w/ in a couple months (I'm coming to this game late). I might have gotten it from MacPlay, or from Apple's online store...
