Mac version of F1 and F2?

VirtualAlex

Still Mildly Glowing
I had a pretty slick conversion of F1 and F2 but my upgrade to OSX: Lion broke them... along with a ton of other things.

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can get lion compatible versions of F1 and F2 anywhere.

Lion removes Rosetta, which is needed to run PowerPC-only apps on Intel machines. Easiest solution is to get the Windows version of Fallout and run it using Wine (winehq.org) or Parallels.

Fallout can't run on any version of OS X above 10.5.5 (or 10.5.2) - which is when OS X stopped supporting 256 color mode (thanks for making that decision for us oh wise Apple!!)

Lion can never run those games since Apple decided we don't need PPC support any more (thanks for making that decision for us oh wise Apple!!)

On an Intel Mac one can run Fallout 1 in DOSBox (Boxer recommended) - but Fallout 2 is plain out.

You can try to find Cider-wrapped versions of those games I guess.. but essentially Mac OS X doesn't support any Mac versions of Fallout.

Actually, I have no trouble running the Macplay ports of fallout 1 and 2 on osx 10.6.8. Not sure why they work, but they do. I was worried when I updated from 10.4 last year but everything still runs smoothly. I'm sure lion would break the games though.

I've been trying to play Fallout 1, both off a regular and the Fallout collection released, on my Mac using Wine but I can't get it to seem to work. I can install but then I can't find where the file is, and if I go to the Autorun.exe, it will give me the Please Stand By message, before the game crashes. Wine can run other Windows stuff like Notepad and it's working enough to show the install screen of Fallout, so I don't think Wine's the issue.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm using a fairly new Mac running Lion. 10.7.3

I run fallout 1 on lion. Just used and iso unpacker, crossover games and dosbox. It will crash from time to time, but it works!

Wineskin

You can do like GOG did with Fallout 2 and run it in Wineskin. They used Wineskin Engine WS8Wine1.1.44 and considering I had more issues with a newer engine I would start with that one. The hires mod helps the running state a lot too, I find. What worked best seemed to be running it in DirectDraw7 mode with 8-bit colour. I've found the performance of Fallout 1 very fast, since enabling all of that.
