Making a Fallout 2-like game

Ran

First time out of the vault
Hey guys and gals,

For long I've wanted to create my own Fallout-like game, and I'm slowly but steadily making this come true, but I desperately need feedback, to know what works and what does not work.

There is a fully functionnal prototype of my game downlable here for free on itch.io.

It's an adventure/RPG in isometric 3D, with a focus on adventure and dialogs. The settings are not postapocalyptic though (even if in my mind the sequel should be, if ever there is one). And it includes a Boules minigame because everybody loves minigames and Boules.

My first ambiton was to make a huge RPG/survival/adventure game in the wilderness, but it was very ambitious indeed, so the project was downscaled to something more modest, but I still believe that it's possible to make something cool with the right feedback and ideas. So please do not hesitate to comment :)

And here is the English trailer to give a better idea.

The tentative title was initially "Fallout 2 goes to the beach" but it was dropped for evident copyright issues (and because it sucked too). The new tentative title is "Memories of Summer", which puts emphasis more on the "adventure" side of the game. Nevertheless, I still wanted the reference to the Fallout series to stand out somehow, so I put a couple Easter Eggs. :)

i haven't played it yet, but it doesn't really look like a fallout 2-like game. it's just isometric :)

...And it's a bit too close up.

Fallout's visual presentation had a logic behind it. The UI was made to resemble repurposed machinery; found objects from the game world. While the actual vantage... well, that's self evident:

Hmm, there may be a mistunderstanding... I didn't say that I was trying to make a Fallout clone or sequel. I could have said I was trying to make a Baldur's-Gate-like, but actually I loved Fallout and I didn't spend much time on Baldur's Gate so I'm quoting Fallout.

I'm trying to make a game that has more or less those features:
- an open world with scarce settlements in the wilderness (it does not need to be post-apocalyptic actually),
- an adventure/RPG mix,
- a 3D isometric view (my first attempt was real 2D with an isometric view but the pixel art was too much work with the shadows and everything so I switched to real 3D).

For now I totally discarded the tactical combat part, because it's a lot of work and it does not match the story (yet).

All that behind said, the grand plan behind all that is, ultimately, to make a post-apocalyptic survival game, but probably as a third installment of the series, which is designed to follow and ascending order of difficulty of survival (and difficulty of coding too probably):
- the camping,
- the maquis,
- the post-nuclear-war wilderness.

That... may be a bit ambitious for a lone coder. For now it's step 1: camping :)
