Making Fallout 1 Work on xp!

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Alrighty.. before I give you sys specs.. I'd like to mention I have read the stickies.. and searched this forum for any problems that relate to mine.. None were found.

I have tried:

- Disabling hardware acceleration, Disabling vid card, Fiddling with compatability, selecting 256 colors, 800x600 res, disabling visual themes, turning off advanced text, and changing my color settings to a lower setting.

- I have patched fallout.

This is whats happening to me when i try to run fallout with all the suggested tweaks enabled above..
I double click the .exe titled, "falloutw.exe"

It then changes the resolution of my screen.. The screen then goes black.. and pops back to my desktop in lower resolution.

I'm at a loss of what to do. I've read a lot of threads on this board in the past few days that people on Xp have had no problems running the game.. just problems with blackouts and such While In Game! How did you get in game?! heh..

I'm really lost guys.. please help!

Heres my sys specs:

Os: Xp Sp2

cpu: Amd athlon xp 2500+ 1.4 ghz

Vid card: Nvidia geforce Fx 5900Xt

Memory: 512mb of Corsaid DDR ram.

If you need any other sys specs I'll run some kind of audit Proggy to get a more detailed list.. but those are my general hardware specs.. nothing too great.. right :P

Anyways.. I havent played fallout 1 in ages.. not since I was running windows 98... I've been playing fallout 2 too much too often and NEED to apease my fiending for fallout 1! Help :!:

Edit:

I understand that another easy way to get fallout1 working.. Is to DL windows virtual machine and install windows 98 on it. This is not an option for me. I do not have a windows 98 disk lying around. Nor do I want to buy a copy of it.. So any suggestions or comments related to this method will be kindly refused..

- How have you patched Fallout?

- How and what did you exactly install.

As stated above.. yes I patched fallout..

As for the installation.. I dont really remember. It was a while ago :?

I think its safe to asume that I installed it off the disk as normal. Everything in the directory seems normal..

Edit: Like I said above.. the screen goes black when i try to start fallout.. as if it was loading.. But then just pops back to my desktop in 800x600 res. There is no sound.. in other words.. I'm not just getting sound and no visual.. im getting nothing. I checked my process and "Falloutw" Is running and taking up a total like like.. 5mb of memory.

I've also tried an 'advanced game loader' that was suggested in another thread with nothing new happening.. some symptoms.

I didn't ask you whether you patched it, I asked you *how* you patched it.

Working under assumptions when trying to fix a problem does not work. Either re-install or find out.

I downloaded the windows official patch.. and installed it.

and I remembered how I installed it.. Long story short. I installed it via a backup copy I ripped to my hard drive a while ago as a backup copy. Just in case I lost or damaged my disk beyond repair or use.

Again: *HOW* did you install it. Direct install, manual install etc

Also, has it *ever* worked on Windows XP for you?

I Pretty certain that It was a direct install. The patch and the game.

I also dont ever recall being able to play Fallout on Xp.. I might be mistaken. But as far as I can remember I played it on windows 98 when I first got the copy of the game.. I may have played it on windows 2k also.. But I know for a Fact that it worked on windows 98... and yet to work on xp.

Sorry Sander.. I wasted your time.. This all could have been avoded if I had just reinstalled to start.. and went from there.

Reinstalled.. and now enjoying the original fallout.. once again!

Thanks for the help.. and the effort to getting me back into the wastes!

hello guys. my screen goes black every 3rd seconds. i tried to reinstall it, run in compatibility mode, with the one and only fallout 1 patch (manual patch), and it dont solve the problem.

(sry 4 my terrible english)

Try reading everything in the stickies. *cough* acceleration *cough*

*yhk, kyhk, background programs* Try Ctrl+Alt+Del and killing off all services and processes that you can (disconnect from the network before you kill off your AV,though ;)

So get Linux and install Wine - works like a charm ;)

I understand you've the Windows version (falloutw.exe) and not old DOS one (fallout.exe) ? If it's the second, or if you could get that exe, you could try DOSBox...
