Mapper Editor

First time out of the vault
Hey guys, has anyone else come across this problem before? I've only recently found out about this whole F2 modding scene, so I downloaded myself the mapper to see what I could do. I installed it fine and I got the "Can't Load Fonts" error which I fixed. I ran it, it opened up fine but I quickly figured out I didn't have a clue what I was doing, so I alt-tabbed out, read up on it a bit (ended up here,) tried to alt-tab back in but the program had stopped responding.

I CTRL+ALT+DEL'd it and tried to reload it but I just got a black screen. And I got a black screen EVERY TIME I tried to reload the program and I have to CTRL ALT DEL out of it every time.

So I uninstalled it and re-installed it and I still get a black screen every time I try and run it. So I uninstalled it and deleted all the data files off my computer and reinstalled it but I'm STILL getting a black screen every time I try and install it.

It's getting pretty frustrating now and I've done a forum search and looked around for a similiar problem but haven't been able to find one. If anyone else has come across this before or knows or a solution it would help me out thanks.

did you install it on an external drive or something?

Nope, I have just one drive and I'm running XP.

restart the computer and when you turn it back on try turning off norton/mcafee or any of those programs and try to see if it works

Alright, just gave that a shot and I'm still getting the same black screen problem. No error message or anything, it just hangs on the black screen until I CTRL ALT DEL out and kill the process.

You're nor running 64 bit version of windows by any chance are you? I had something similiar happen to me (stupid 64 bits!!!).

I don't know about this. I'm not very TECH SAVVY. Is there some way I can find out? Or could you post the solution to how you fixed it and I'll try that out. Unless it is uninstall windows!

you could try right clicking on like the desktop, going to properties and then click the tab "settings" and see what the color setting is at... should be like 32 bit

Oh right, Yes it's at 32 bit and that's the highest it can go.

if you right click on the icon that u click to open the program up there should be some properties that you can check out to see if it opens at the right window parameters and such

There was no optimize for XP option in there so I tried each combination and I got the same results no matter what I tried. I appreciate your help here guys and I'm going to keep trying different things but it's lookin pretty hopeless right now.

I were not talking about the colour depth of the screen, but rather the version of windows.

Windows XP 64 bit
Windows XP 32 bit (normal version for most PCs)

But chances are if you dont know what I'm talking about you dont have it. But the 64 bit version doesnt like a lot of 32 bit applications (such as the editor).

I do have an idea on where you can go to fix it but I'm loath to suggest this since you said you are not that technical - edit the registry.

First up before you even try this you need to relise that when it comes to registry editing you can kill your PC and have to reinstall windows if you are not careful. There is no need to save when editing if you delete something its gone no second chances....

Anyway uninstall the mapper and fallout 2 and then do this

1) Click on the start menu and select 'Run'
2) Type 'regedit' and press ok
3) Expand 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
4) Expand 'SOFTWARE'
5) Select the 'folder' (technicaly its called a 'key') called 'Black Isle' and delete it (thogh it might be called 'interplay')

You might need to repeat this process but start in the 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER' key instead, I'm not sure if it stores anythig there though.

This should whipe any other setting for fallout and the mapper. Just reinstall it all and try again

Also make sure you have followed all of the instructions to correctly set up the mapper:

http://www.coljack.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/fallout/

Go through the tutorial for making new protos

Well I'll give it a shot. If I'm just deleting the black isle folder there's not much risk there.

EDIT: Okay I just tried this, after uninstalling there is no blackisle folder in regedit. I'll try re-installing, uninstalling and doing this again tomorrow however.

can't believe no one has asked this...

you do have the game installed don't you?

what are your paths?
