WASHINGTON, March 19, 2006 — A bloody videotape shot by a local Iraqi journalism student has prompted the Pentagon to launch a criminal investigation into an incident that left at least 15 Iraqi civilians dead in the city of Haditha.

The details of what happened four months ago in Haditha are just now coming to light with the release of the videotape by an Iraqi organization called Hammurabi Human Rights.

The tape shows the bloodied and bullet-marked homes that had been allegedly stormed by the Marines, and includes comments by local residents.

"This is my father," a boy says on the tape. "He didn't do anything wrong. Why did they kill him?"

'These Are Children'

The video shows the bodies of some of the dead, including one of three children killed.

"These are children," one man on the tape says. "Are you telling me these are terrorists?"

It all started when a roadside bomb hit a convoy of 12 Marines in Haditha, killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Miguel Terrazas.

The official press release said simply: "A U.S. Marine and 15 Iraqi civilians were killed yesterday from the blast of a roadside bomb."

Military officials now acknowledge the Iraqis were not killed by the bomb — but, they now say, by crossfire as U.S. Marines stormed the surrounding homes.

The military did not launch an investigation until two months after the incident, when Time magazine showed officials the video and eyewitness testimony.

"We launched an investigation of our own with the help of a human rights group," said Aparisim Ghosh, a writer for Time. "We spoke to some eyewitnesses. And it turns out all the people killed were killed by the Marines in small arms fire and, in a few instances, by an explosive that was tossed into the home by the Marines themselves."

Senior Pentagon officials would not comment on the details of the case but said they take the allegations very seriously, which is why they've launched the criminal investigation.

It still is not clear the Marines used excessive force, but the locals seem to have made up their minds.

"They came and started shooting all of a sudden," one local said. "They didn't even knock on the door. They killed them wholesale."

According to a military spokesman, the Marines involved still are deployed in Iraq.
Can anyone say "My Lai"?

Smile, you're on candid camera! I'm afraid that is what will be required in order to fully convince some people that US troops are generally treating the Iraqi civvy population like cattle.

My Lai, Operation Wedding Party, Operation Wedding Party 2, Operation Holy Feast, etc., etc. Too bad only one of those is from Nam, because the same kind of butchery of the civilians seems to be ignored or at least glossed over as a whole, to be forgotten in the midst of next week's meme and journalistic item of the week. My Lai sparked a hell of an outrage.

Now, prison abuse, violations of international laws and humanitarian laws, and massacres don't really seem to phase the common US citizen, in particular fat morons like Mike Lafferty, one of Bush's most devoted ass-suckers on the west coast. Who has on more than one occasion made light of troop deaths in Iraq, obviously doesn't care about Iraqi civvies given his attitude and validation of Bush' action, lies constantly about the actions of the president, and also has excused what Bush has done by saying other presidents have done the same thing, while not even being able to get his shit straight.

I only wished that they published those online, since this fellow made anything anyone said on these forums pro-war look outright educated by comparison, and I'd love to share what this fat cretin will undoubtedly use to excuse this incident. One of my friends sends me the R&NR from Reno, which has quite a few topics that the mainstream media doesn't cover, and also has an obnoxious conservative monkey on a chain for the people in Reno to poke at. I find it quite informative, especially in the realm of how fucking STUPID some people can be in their denial of events.

Why the fuck would they help rest of the family medically after executing most of it?

I think we should wait more facts before jumping the america bashing, not like this would be first time Iraqis tell bullshit about evil amerikans killing their children.

Well, they can't ignore *all* international humanitarian laws and expect to still remain in power.

In the words of Jon Stewart:
"It's not that we have to make this shit up, it's that we wish we had to."

I do admit I'm curious about this "fabricated bullshit", as I can't see any fabrication to be worse than shutting the water off to a city of hundreds of thousands, or taking out a wedding party with detailed accounts of children retelling the graphic way in which their sibling lost limbs or were decapitated from the attack, but were now quite dead. Really, please stun me with this conspiracy that is somehow supposed to top what is publicly known about US troop activities.

How about those Trade Towers, eh?

Biggest damn firework ever let off in NY. Hey, since I don't care about human cockroaches, especially those that live in NYC, let's invite more terrorists to take out some more of the skyline.

Now minus the sarcasm, I now have to point out that it was people who shared and acted your moronic mentality in the 80's that helped create this problem to fuel the fundamentalist regimes.

I was kind of wondering where you went. Mostly because I miss the discussions. Maybe we should start one right now.

Have a particular topic in mind, or are you going to bust out the KY again?

Humans.

Value of life! HAH! Humankind is the prime example of this going down the drain.

First they wage war. WTC for example, or you can go back to history where US did it first, and then go a bit further back and see it was the other guys again...keeps on going and going... Anyway, we wage war and when the opponent get enough pissed off due to peopel dying, grannies getting flashbacks. They come to make a visit and stomp your ass down (war in Irak, war in every frigging country where there is a war). When that happens people start whining "you can't do that, that's not in the rules! We started it, but you still can't do that!"

I really don't give a rats ass (no offence ratty) about WHAT happens under war. WAR itself is already FUBAR! If things like this happen when it's peacetime, then it another matter (and no, I don't think they have "peace" there). WAR is the biggest crime against the value of life. It's like getting executed twice. There really isn't ny point in the latter.

It's war, shit happens. If you have a war-hungry goverment (or some idiot holding the throne) then the guilt is also on the civilians. Look in the past, when there was some shitter ruling, they assasinated him/her or made a revolution and then chopped his/her head off.

Value of life. Innocent people. Bah.
