Will a recruit with power armor and excellent melee skills manage to run towards a robot and bash it to the death or will he be gunned down before he even lands a punch? And has anyone tried fighting the behemoth in close combat?

I can't say I'd be brave enough to try it. Plus only energy and explosive weapons can do any real damage to a behemoth.

Personally I think melee & unarmed are not worth spending points over - much better places you can put them unless you're a purist (or a Steven Seagal fan).

You really need good sneak skills to use melee combat. Its only (marginally) good when you finally get slayer and can dish out crits left and right. I've experimented with deathclaw unarmed combat which is pretty good. Deathclaws do automatic criticals with every hit (just like the slayer perk) and combined with bonus HTH dmg perk and Rabid trait can turn it into a real close-combat monster. The tagged skills of the Deathclaw recruits suck though - which moron selected First Aid to tag when deathclaws can't use that freaking skill?
