Memory Error

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Hello there, new user here. Bought FO3 and have really gotten into the universe, currently playing through number 2 having finished one =)

Anyway, i've run into a problem. Im getting a memory error whenever i attempt to travel to downtown Klamath. Now normally id attribute this to a software error or my RAM Dying, but it only happens on one save. The save in question is after i've rescued Smiley and for some reason his return to Klamath is making my game crash. All other saves where he's still stuck underground let me walk into downtown Klamath no worries.

The error in question is your typical "The instruction at XXXXXXX referenced memory at XXXXXXX. The memory could not be read from."

I've tried a character editor (Vad's is it?), but it locks up when i select the culprit save slot.

Admittedly im not that far in, but having spent hours struggling with windows 7 and making the game run with normal colors (<3 Killap) I'd like to avoid having to remake the save if at all possible, not to mention remaking might leave me in the same spot when i remake it anyway.

Does anyone have any idea why this has occurred and how i could fix/prevent it?

Fallout V1.02
FO2 Restoration Mod + Killaps Patch (I've uninstalled these and attempted to do it without them installed. Same problem)
Windows 7 64 Bit.

Thanks
Darcy

First of all you don't need Killap's patch if you install the RP. It's already part of it.

Second, seeing that your version is 1.02. Do you have a patch000.dat file in your Fallout 2 folder? If you do have one delete it and try loading your save again.

If the save can't be loaded by the game you might have to start over again.

If nothing of the above steps help you, it might be a problem with Windows 7.

Yeah, just mentioned it for claritys sake. Seems as though that was redundant however =(

I found the relevant file and deleted it, but sadly same dice. Still errors and crashes. Ah well, thanks for your time and help anyway. Ill remake it on a fresh fallout install. Just so i can avoid it again (Hopefully), does anyone know what causes smileys return to crash it?

Smileys return does not crash the map - normally that is. This is the first I've heard of it. If you still have a save I would like to take a look at it, and I'll fix it if I can.

Having looked I have two installs of the game. (One from way back i had forgotten about) Anyway, i've just realized the fallout.cfg file was modified in the old install and might have been pulling resources from the version with the restoration mod, so its possible i broke it . Not to mention i'm not 100% sure which of these installs the shortcut was pointing at. (I've been a fool and moved the saves around since finding it to try make it work, so i don't even know which one i was originally playing =/)

I'm not 100% sure though and if your still willing to sift through the save i'd be grateful, although ill probably just make a new one to avoid confusion between versions and any possible corruption.

Hmm, I can't even load your save. It crashes right away.
I have tried with RP 1.2 , both a full install and a minimal one.
What am I missing?

Like you said, vad's savegame editor can't open it either (I completely missed that you had already tried).

I could open the map saves in the Mapper though, and they seemed to be OK. Looks to me like something is wrong in the save.dat file so unfortunately there's nothing I can do. Need to use a hex editor for that and I have no clue what to look for even :|

I don't know what to say really, but I guess you should try to make a fresh install of the game and start over, either that or load an earlier save and try to save Smiley again. If that don't work you just have to leave him in the caves I suppose.

=(

Thank's for your help anyway mate, much appreciated. Ill load up a fresh install tonight and go from the top. I have a inkling that i might have broken it with the whole double install thing, so if that is the case, oops

Necroing to give a update.

Fresh install and i'm golden, Smiley returned with no problems on the new save and so far its been solid. Random crash last night but i think it was a one off. Hopefully >.>
