Metalheart comments (+demo URL)

Still Mildly Glowing
I searched forums but didnt find a discussion about this game and its gameplay. If I am wrong please redirect me.

Just got the demo and impressions are pretty good. I read that its a beta of the gameplay so Im hoping few issues were fixed. Graphics are ace, dialogue is pretty funny, especially the english translation. Characters seem to have character (heh). I just found out about the game and was fearing it was going to suffer like Restricted Crapea. But it seems like a pretty decent fallout clone..hmmm fallout sense tingling. Please post any knowledge about this game since I know very little about it.

I will finish the demo and post some final thoughts.
and yeah the boxcover with the chick gets my vote

(sorry if link is against publisher's wishes, I read they pulled the demo because it was a bad representation of the game....i think its pretty nice! check it out)

ps. judging from the fact that producer hangs out on this website, this game has pretty high standards ;)

Generally I'm disappointed with game-demos that are said to have something falloutish in them, but not this time!

Music, atmosphere, weapons and beginning of the plot... - all look very promising here. And yes, it feels somewhat falloutish too (maybe because of crashed shuttle an rad(?)scorpions running around it).

Moreover, Akella are russians(?) and it's told that fallout was most successful in east-european counties (in terms of being played a lot, not paid for...). Maybe I'm wrong, but I think, that next good close-to-fallout-game will come from east-europe. If it isn't Metalheart this time (and I *really* hope it is), it will be bourgeoisie (or something else) next time...

I'm kinda looking forward to this game, even it isn't as epic as the Fallout games (which I really do no know as I have not seen a single review of this game yet), a new turn-based sci-fi-ish CRPG title for $20 (brand new) piques my interest.

Akella are russians(?)
Yes, they are.
...
I've just finished the game (final-version) and it is rather good. But, unfortunately, it's not Fallout 3. Only design seems familiar, battles are turn-based... That's probably all...

But it is so short... It took me only two days to finish it...
And there are some annoying bugs in the game (CTD, for example).

Of course, you, stupid capitalistic pigs, will get the game with a patch inside. Argh!

About pigs... It is a joke, of course :)

yeah i read about the bugs, and the upcoming patch

i also read of the quite linear storyline, which is not so bothering as there are a lot of random side quests. of course, with the bugs mainly addressed, the $20 price tag still may be a nice purchase for a different diversion.

gotta be better than Restricted Area, eh? ;)

Linear. Absolutely, I may say.
There are not lots of side quests :( I must admit, there are unlimited number of quests but most of all are random generated. All of them are quite similar: to kill NPC there, to deliver item, to bring item. And there are only about 15 side quests with interesting storyline and unusual task.
I don't want to say that game is a piece of you-know-what. I quite enjoied playing it Ж)

yeah, that is what I am discovering, if it was $30 or $40, I would pass it up for a while. But at $20 (at least what EB Games is reporting as their price), doesn't sound half-bad.

Odd, it will be the first PC RPG game I hae bought in a LONG time... or any PC Game for that matter :-P

So I played the game today, for about 10 minutes.
Then I uninstalled it as quickly as I could.
Waste of time and space if you ask me.
The intro video looked pretty good though.
Then the game started with some dialog.
Thre was some pretty funny stuff there, like for example the text says "city to the west" but the voice says "city to the east".
And then there was a scorpion that was about as strong as one of my character.
When I killed it, I got to loot the body and found a scorpion tail. Oh my, so original, how did they ever come up with that.
I tried to move on, but it was pretty hard because the characters didn't seem to know how to run.
The walking was VERY annoying.
And the combats were very slow too.
So to sum up, the game is very slow and I couldn't take it for long.
I have to say that I played and enjoyed resitrected area even longer than this garbage.

yeah, i have heard NOT good things about it... i'm skipping it.

gonna buy me a copy of arcnum instead, never played that one... save $10 ;)

It's really not very good, imo. The characters can only run about 10 feet before becoming winded, the controls aren't that great. I still haven't figured out a hot key to quickly switch between characters without actually clicking on them or their portrait, and even the lowest level enemies are extremely difficult to kill, considering one of the characters starts out with a minigun. He misses at point blank range. What the hell? Getting money is way too easy, though time consuming with the slow ass movement. And I alredy stumbled upon an item duplication exploit, similar to the one in diablo before it was fixed. There are areas that if you go too near, (ie. 100 yards away from) guards for no reason kill you without even a warning to get away. I'm glad I didn't waste 20 bucks on this game.

I'm willing to overlook the problems that I've seen, if the game would fucking work on intel extreme graphics 2 laptop chipsets...

Someone in the know (since I gather they don't watch their own forum too well) send me a PM if the official patch works please?

Metalheart: Designed and coded by cretins

Trudge, trudge, trudge, listen to terrible music in the background, trudge, trudge,
crash to desktop, reload, trudge, listen to badly translated NPC, trudge, realise
that the quest specification in your journal has little in common with what the
NPC actually said, trudge, go to VERY Fallout world map, listen to terrible tin-pot
music again whilst trying to get the collision detection on cities to work, get hit
by three 'random encounters' which must have been rolled on a 1-sided dice,
crash to desktop, notice one of your implants has disappeared (but still drains
energy), cry, book appointment with therapist to recover from game trauma.

For a sequel, perhaps the developers could just make some poser models
and have them urinating on a copy of Fallout, whilst they jeer poorly
translated and monotone insults at you.

Scores(out of 100):

Music: -100
Plot: -100
Localisation/Translation: -10000
Beta Testing/QA: -12500

Total score: -22700 out of 100. AVOID.

Another thing I don't get is how these eastern block games are getting past licences. With UFO:Aftermath (Czech game) no licence was sought for the XCOM series even though the game appearance and mechanics are identical. MH (Russia) steals so much material from Fallout (regurgitating it badly) that there's a case for copyright infringement.

It seems Restricted Area isn't alone in the bottom. I anticipate it might actually get quite crowded down there when Dungeon Siege II and NWN: Pirates of the Swordcoast jump into the fray.

Isn't "Pirates of the Sword Coast" just one of those mini campaigns
like "Kingmaker"?

Yes, it's a mini campaign, only priced like a full-fledged expansion. It will probably cost at least $30 (which is the price tag original NWN should have had from day one).

I thought they only charged $10 to direct download them from
the Bioware site? I'll check sometime.

Watched the intro movie... and noticed that they used a sound bite from MechWarrior 2...
"Sensors: online. Weapons: online. All systems nominal."
