Microsoft and the future of Cyberpunk/post Apoc RPGs?

McRibbs

First time out of the vault
Interesting bit of news, Microsoft sensing that their current system was lacking top quality RPGs felt the need to secure a RPG license for their next system, to be announced at E3, the license they obtained while somewhat obscure does hold a cult following similar to fallout, though not as widely noticed.

The license: Shadowrun, a Cyberpunk RPG for SNES and Sega Genesis.

This should be interesting to see how it turns out. Hopefully a open ended RPG not a action/adventure RPG a la Fable.

This could (note: COULD) be cool. I remember the Shadowrun on both the SNES and the Genesis. Both were more what you would call an action RPG, but i did enjoy both of them nonetheless. They were actually somewhat open ended for old console games. For those that don't know the Sega and SNES versions differed from each other rather drastically. Not only in presentation, but also play control, story, and everything else.

Also, for those that don't know, Shadowrun is an old pen and paper RPG. I've never had a chance to play the p&p version, although i would like to if ever given the chance. The setting was really great. It's my opinion that it's a well thought out universe.

Shadowrun isn't post apoc, it's cyberpunk. It's universe is based more on major corporations having all the power, and people install "cyberware" to enhance their bodies, and gangs roam the streets.

Anyone who likes cyberpunk, but hasn't played the games should give both of them a try, you might be really surprised. You can mod your guns with laser scopes, silencers, flash suppressors, and even a smart link that plugs right into your head for more accurate shooting. You could also use this "data jack" to plug a cyberdeck into. Then you could log in to computers and hack the system to lets say, crash the security system so you can sneak around insdie one of the corporations without being seen on the cameras or triggering the security alarms.

You could also (in the Sega version) hack data stores and sell corporate data to this guy in downtown Seattle.

Oops! Sorry for going on about it, i forgot all about those games until i saw this thread. Reminded me of old times. I've got the urge to play them again. :D

A new Shadowrun game would be pretty sweet.

I'm bummed I have to buy an X-Box 2, though. I just bought an X-Box not too long ago!

This is interesting....

Oh, a link maybe?

But without the tile jumping parts :D

It sure would be, but I'll be damned if I'll buy a new microsoft console just to play it.

McRibbs - MSoft has licence on Shadowrun c-games at least since 1999 !!!
They refresh their patent in November.
If you will give me source of that news about E3 - I will believe you. But not now. Such "news" are on the net at least once per year.
Give me the source and I'll apoloigize. But in other case - I will treat that as other rumours.

For those who asked, the source is the rumor section of the March issue of "Official Xbox Magazine." Not the april issue coming out on march 22nd, and in some cases already shipped to those who subscribe.

This issue has unreal on the cover as opposed to what I assume will be a Jade Empire cover next month.

The brief article seems to imply they are hearing rumors of Shadowrun on Xbox 2.

Also about E3, it's the Xbox 2, Xbox Next, or I think they're now calling it Xenon that MS is going to announce. Which supposedly will hit stores this year, fallish. I've kind of grown skeptical about that release date, but I could see early 2006.

Also I didn't mean to imply that this was a hard fact, but just an interesting case of circumstances, again the article seems to imply more, but it is in the rumor section.

I don't understand why anything given as a rumor in an official magazine (associated with the Evil of Microsoft no less) would be seen as more than propaganda.

This was probably leaked intentionally to gauge public reaction without committing to anything.

/conspiracy theorist

They are doing everything in the future with the Unreal3 engine Rosh, like Bioware after the PC game they are making now.

Now the engine is indeed impressive, visually, and flexible, but i don`t know if something good in terms of gameplay can be made out of it, with the exception of FPS games, of course.

Maybe I will have to lift my boycott of Microsoft hardware. Unless it's ported to PC.

I used to play Shadowrun PnP, and had much enjoyment. I loved the cyber punk world, and played in a semi post-apoc campaign. Much like the fallout world, but a few years before it came out. Maybe it was based on Wasteland, but not sure, definitely influenced by Auto-Duel, and Car Wars.

Memories of Shadowrun...

Going inside the Renraku Arcology after it's been shut down, the team finds a little girl. Naturally, I name her Newt.

Designed my very own spider drone... made the stats... then sketched it on paper... then drafted it in AutoCad... then modeled it in Bryce.

My friends and I were going through the Food Fight scenario in the "First Run" sourcebook... there was only one fight, and about 5 or 6 pages of intro (you go to a convenience store for munchies) and conclusion (you beat the gang)... we spent about 6 hours playing... the actual fight only lasted two rounds.

Wasting 15 minutes of playing time calculating how big a hole will be made in a 1-foot thick steel wall by a 55-gallon barrell filled with C4.

Wreaking havoc with a custom spell called "Magic Fingers 2"... yes, think dirty.
