Modding what ~exactly?

The GECK wiki is a pretty good source of information; what are you trying to do that isn't covered there?

There are changes to the format, but for the most part, their Oblivion (and even Morrowind) tutorials for custom modeling are very informative. Unless you are doing armor, much of that is directly applicable, and would help you get custom models into the game.

The most important things you'll need are a 3D model package ~like Blender, and a recent copy of the Nif Scripts for Blender. This allows Blender to export NIF models.

Official Blender 2.49b default: (All three of these would need to be installed)

[Optional /instead]
Unofficial ~user compiled~ Blender 2.49b [GraphicAll.org]:

** I have not been active with NIF scripts lately, so if they've released a new one for the new Blender version ~I don't know; but last I checked, Nif-Scripts only worked with the win32 Blender version 2.49b ~so that is the one you would want to install.

The other essential tool to have is Nifscope; this lets you edit NIF models directly... very powerful tool.

There are several tutorials on Youtube for using Nifskope for [very] basic model editing. Nifskope will be your tool for final export of your custom guns and props ~even partitioned armor models; indispensable.
