Now, that fallout 2 has come out on the mac (finally!) I wanna get started modding and stuff. can any one help me out with a place to start?

Assuming the code is different on the Mac version I doubt if you could use exactly the same info. Can you use all of the windows modding programs??

You might want to get yourself a hex editor and see if the locations match up with what has been documented for the windows version. Otherwise you may be entirely on your own....

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-02 AT 06:20PM (GMT)[p]I'm am so happy to own the Macintosh version. Unfortunately, it seems to use different addresses than the PC version... I'm attempting to modify my character as well. I have found the hexadecimal addresses in the data fork of the saved game file. The variable is stored as a normal hex number, and are separated by a blank nibble. They are as follows:
Strength - 9AD2
Perception - 9AD6
Endurance - 9ADA
Charisma - 9ADE
Intelligence - 9AE2
Agility - 9AE6
Luck - 9AEA
I'm trying to find out how to modify the skills through the hex editor, but it is difficult. The one I'm using (Resourcerer) doesn't compare two files very well. You see, I tried searching through the saved game file for the Small Guns trait, which I knew I had at 101. So doing a quick hex conversion, I put that into the search box, and it came up with nothing. I then realized that the skill is dependant on your base skills (SPECIAL), and I don't know the formula. If I knew it, I could then find the actual number of skill points invested, and modify that. So I changed the number of skill points invested in Small Guns by one and saved the game. Comparing the two files using Resourcerer was a futility treatment. Argh.
If anyone has any information that can help me, please email or reply to my post.

I have had Fallout 2 for about a year; Beat it, beat it again, got
bored, started up again, ect. and I wanted to try to mod / patch it. here's
the scoop:

~I've downloaded the basic modding tools for PC platforms*, and can run them through an application called Darwine, but I have no idea how to install a mod from the "fallout 2 mac mods" section of this website.

(*tools I've download / run: FALCHE, f2ie2, ModRunner, datexpl.)

(I know from experience that Darwine works; I have used Grand Theft
Auto (San Andreas) on mac (and it was filed differently than a PC
version) and modded it perfectly well with the regular PC tools
through Darwine, but I needed to find out how first. I found the guide
to modding in the modding FAQ section, but my version of Fallout 2 is
filed differently.)

So - How do I install a mod and patch for fallout 2 on a mac?

Data files go in ~/Library/Application Support/Fallout2/DATA/ ; this is equivalent to C:\Program Files/Fallout2/DATA/ on the PC. Anything you put in the proto directories must be locked or it will be deleted by the game. The patch000.dat file overrides other data, so you'll want to rename it so that it isn't used. It's found at /Applications/Fallout 2.app/Contents/Resources/GameData/

Mods that alter the executable (e.g. using sfall) will not work.

that helped, I now know what to do (editing the contents of the game didn't work, heh.)

is there a way to use tools like f21e2 on a mac as well?
and while I'm asking, is there a way to get the end boss plasma gun? (the ridiculous plasma chaingun that Frank Horrigan uses.)

I've heard several rumors about ways, but never have been able to actually get it.
(The rumor was to kill several of Sargent Granite's marines over Horrigan's dead body, after killing him with violence set on "none."
then, loot the bodies of the marines, and if you switch between them you can access Horrigan's body, and his items.)
I'm playing with the patched version, does the patch do away with that possibility?

If it's written for Windows, it's only going to run on Windows.

A savegame editor is the easiest way to get items you're not normally supposed to have. You could try renaming the proto to replace another item, e.g. the 9mm mauser.

is there an inventory editing tool for mac, in that case?
also, I did try renaming the proto (from 00000471.pro (a medic kit) to 00000531.pro (the end boss plasma gun) but when I tried to load the edited savegame, fallout 2 crashed.

once again, thank you. thank you very much.
I have encountered another problem: It seems I cannot reload weapons such as the end boss plasma gun (I've tried it's ammunition, .223 fmj, and both energy cartridges, but no luck.) or other weapons like it (the plasma turret.)
is there any hope of being able to install major mods such as Fallout 2 The Last Hope 1.04?
