Modding Player Models

~Poke~

First time out of the vault
Hey everyone!
I'm looking at making a mod of Fallout 3, but before I even start there's something that I'd like to know.

Would it be possible to edit the base model that the humans are based on? Not just to include more leg hair or something silly like that, but say, into an entirely different form? Like a pony? (Please tell me some of you have heard of Fallout Equestria???)

So yeah, if you could let me know of a method that would be great.

PS. I've already looked into the model files, I know they're editable. I'm curious about character creation, animation, things like that.

Well... I don't know a lot about it, but i am pretty sure that all humans use the same skeleton and the same base meshes, so I would assume that base body changes would affect every standard human in the game.

** I'm going to guess that even if you created a custom creature that looked human and used the standard human skeleton... that giving him a big pot belly (for instance), might cause his belly to clip badly when crouching or might even clip into tables and bars when sitting at them or on bar stools.

You can create outfits to completely change your character's body type (there's a mod to make your character into a huge barbarian, for example) but it would still utilize the same skeleton.

I don't believe it's possible to make the PC into a pony, but you might be able to make them into a sort of super mutant.

there are horse models in TESIV you might be able to port over. Ive seen people riding horse mods on youtube. other than this i know nothing. weird request really.

Thankyou for your information everyone.

I've been messing around with the GECK over the last few days, and I've come to a few conclusions.

1. While it's possible to make a new race using different models, these models are stretched and deformed to fit the skeleton, if they appear at all. It also doesn't let me choose another skeleton, so I would have to change the skeleton for everyone.

2. It's impossible to take the coyote.nif and make it look even vaguely like a horse or pony. The torso, yes. The head, no.

3. Getting models online is no good, because while I can import them, most have no distinction between legs, torso, neck etc. which means they wouldn't have any animation.

I think my mission for today is to get Skyrim, and replace all humans with Skyrim horses. Sounds like the simplest way to do it, though that will leave me open to copyright issues (Distributing their horse model to people who download my mod). I figure I can get a proper model made later, I'd just like to see this working first.

Finally, if anyone recognises what I'm trying to do... please don't make a big fuss over it. I haven't asked permission yet cause I'd like something to show, and currently I'm not actually sure if it's possible.

EDIT

Oh, I'm such a noob at this. Another question.

If I were to replace the skeleton.nif with a different one, that would work right? Well my problem is, there isn't an option to simply point at a different file, so I would have to replace the one that's used by humans.

How would this work in terms of creating a downloadable file? Unless I'm missing something, I would have to give people the whole meshes.bsa with the replaced skeleton.nif, because there isn't an option to simply use a different file like there is for everything else...
