More ICNTATN from Hines

Psychosniper of Duck And Cover decided to boldly go where all others have, err.. well he asked Pete Hines (PR Bethesda) the usual question:
PS: Hello Mr Hines, I'm known as PsychoSniper on the fa fansites NMA and dag.

I have a simple yes no question.

Does Bethesda intend to keep to the canon storyline as established on
fa 1/2 and the fa bible ?

Pete Hines: We'll let folks know what we're up to when we've done a little more work on the game. Right now we're working on putting together the team. It'll be a while before we're ready to start talking about the game.
So more I Can Not Talk About That Now from Pete, the latest buzz I've heard is that it will probably take a year before something emerges.

Actually, it will probably take a year, if not more. My local game store recently "announced" Fallout 3 (I booked it) and set the release date to 2006. I never trust stores, obviously, but maybe they asked Bethesda (you know, official questions from corporations and general business enterprises tend to be answered. It's all about the money). Of course I booked Fallout 3. :)

That might be a good sign if they wernt bull****ing Psycho. Who knows this could turn up roses and we get a good fallout game.

To play devil's advocate, I don't blame them for being hush-hush at this point. Anything they would say right now about the game, even if it is hypothetical, might be construed as gospel and folks would go on a virtual rampage in support or against the idea(s). They are in a very delicate place right now and have a lot of pre-production work to do. They know they have a lot to live up to and I know they would prefer not to earn the wrath of the Fallout faithful. It will be a tough task for them to try and make a game that pleases old and new alike, so them taking their time to make sure all their ducks are in a row is a good thing. No one wants them to rush F3 - I know I don't want them to.

I gotta agree there, rushing isnt good.

That's what caused most of the probs in FO/FO2: Interplay rushing things.

I don't really mind about the hushing, but when I asked Pete about the Baldur's Gate reference he gave me such a stupid answer which sounded like it should have been obvious although I still don't get it - assuming there is anything to get - that I'm rather biased against him now.

Just remeber he is only allowed to release approved information information anyway, hes got a tough job fendinh off some of the FO fanitics that muswt be emailing him. Besides if they are only just putting together the team (or finalising it) then they are still in the early stages of developement anyway.

My mind may be hazy, but did he not previously say he was a director of marketing / PR? Normally those kinda people choose whats approved information information

The developers will have to start interacting with the fans and talking on the forums they make for FO3 at some point ... and the part I wonder about is if they will have any integrity.

My guess and well gut feeling is they will just milk it. And make a dumbed down FPS RPG thats cross platform. I wonder if it will even be better than System Shock 2?

The Morrowinds forums are horrible and the BS there is just plain pathetic! They scream for RT and a FPS (Morrowind with gun game) :(

Right now I'm hoping a publisher picks up Trokia's game and that its the FO3 we are looking for.

PS: this is all just one mans opinion

Spot on.
Since they're beginning from scratch they've got a huge bunch of stuff to do before they can start talking, and promoting.
If they're only on gathering a team, well, then they probably haven't even gone through any "important" brainstorming meetings, and no real decisions have been made.
Just as Hines' is telling Psycho.
If they're saying the same stuff in 6 months (not that it's a magic date though) I'd start wondering. :)
Right now I'm just happy that Fo3 is in the works.

Bethesda: Don't rush and listen to us when you're going into development :D

I just hope it doesnt flop or the would be devs actually listen to the morrowind crackheads. hell if they want morrowind with guns they can make their own god dam mod for it! cant be too hard they've modded it to hell already ya know. if they are still putting the dev team togeather and stuff. maybe we'll have the Fallout game we've been waiting years for. not some dam rushed cheapshots but something they actually refined and tuned. and hopefully nowhere near as buggy.

I don't think it's so much a question of "starting talking" as it is a question of "starting listening".

I'd say that the best thing they could do at Bethesda would be shutting up till they actually got something to say. Hell, they haven't even got a developer team for the game yet (not to mention the complete lack of vision for how the game should be) and still they're talking this and that about Fallout?

I'd agree with Macaco implying that they'd better listen first and then start talking. That would make things better for all parts.

Well, shutting up is one way of doing it.
Right now, they're at least telling us where they are with development, "not begun".

I wonder what we would say if Bethesda didn't say anything at all, or if we would get a "no comment" on every goddamn question.
I for one, think they're being honest.
Hard to shut up when fans are constantly asking them questions... Don't get me wrong, I too want answers, and I definatly think that they at least should give us a hint of what they're gonna do to the game. We've been waiting long enough to deserve an at least hypothetical comment.

"were going to attempt to preserve the spirit, setting, look, gameplay style, and general feel of the first two Fallout games as well as adhere to the previously established story. As for anything else, we simply cant say because the people that will make the game havent even been assigned yet. We'll tell more when we actualy are at a point at which we have something we can tell"

I still dont see why Hines cant drop the doubletalk and say something like that.

I think such a comment would be needed right now. I think they underestimated the Force of us fans :) Or didn't even estimate it at all.
Not saying something like this soon, would be a total fuck up on Bethesdas part.
I've got hope, but if I ever see something about First/Third Person, ACTIONRPG or something like it, my hope's dead. I know what I want out of a Fallout game, and that's not it.

But it seems sad that a 20 yerold kid like me can understand that, when the PR head of a major PC game firm like Hines is to incompetent to give a straight 'I dont know yet' answer minus the double talk.

They should just stop giving interviews until they figure out what they are doing with it.
And let us know what that is at the first opportunity.
Anyone who bugs them for answers should get an automated response.
"We don't have a funking clue what were gonna do with Fallout. We appreciate that fans are anxious to know what the situation is, but there isn't really a situation save that we bought the licence"
Jazz it up a bit with PR jargon then shut the hell up.
Giving interviews every five minutes before you know what you are doing does not seem like a good PR move to me.
